"Is the Aamir Khan era officially over?"
The latest offering of Aamir Khan Productions, Ek Din (2026), was released on May 1, 2026.
However, despite being backed by the Bollywood superstar, once revered for his remarkable script sense, the film has failed to perform well at the box office.
Ek Din is a remake of the Thai film One Day (2016), and stars Aamir’s son, Junaid Khan, with Sai Pallavi in her Hindi film debut.
In the few days since its release, the movie has only earned a little over Rs 2 crores (£1 million) at the box office.
The film also faced tough competition from other releases, including Hollywood’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026).
This has left fans feeling disappointed, as Aamir was famous for delivering popular cinema that often produced high success rates.
Sometimes, his movies were even touted as saving graces in years that witnessed flops from other stars.
His blockbuster, Ghajini (2008), was the first Hindi film to earn Rs 100 crores (£77 million) domestically.
Aamir continued to set new box office milestones with films, including 3 Idiots (2009), Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014), and Dangal (2016).
Unfortunately, his 2018 release, Thugs of Hindostan, ended his spree of hits, with the film becoming a box office flop.
He appeared in two more failures in the form of Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) and Salaam Venky (2022).
In 2025, Aamir Khan bounced back with Sitaare Zameen Par.
But, with the debacles of his recent home productions, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos (2026) and Ek Din, fans have cast doubts over whether this is the same filmmaker who once ruled the box office.
The journalist, Faridoon Shahryar, recently tweeted on X:
“Ek Din, as expected, is a huge disaster. What has happened to Aamir Khan?
“How is he green-lighting films like these? Someone who has always been very quality-conscious seems to have lost the plot.
“From the first promo itself, Ek Din was very cold. Aamir was known for his genius marketing strategies.
“Crying and being apologetic all the time – when did these become marketing strategies of a highly self-respecting man? Beats me….”

“From the 300 crores club pioneer to struggling for a 1 crore opening with Ek Din.
“Laal Singh Chaddha was a heartbreak, Happy Patel sank, and even Sitaare Zameen Par couldn’t reach his old heights.
“Has the Perfectionist lost the pulse of the audience?”
Despite the alleged downfall, it is important to note that several stars have revived their careers very well after a decline.
One only has to look at the career comeback Shah Rukh Khan made with Pathaan (2023) after a spate of unsuccessful films.
Aamir Khan is currently gearing up for his upcoming production starring Sunny Deol and Preity G Zinta.
Initially titled Lahore 1947, it has been rumoured that the film is now titled Batwara 1947.
It is scheduled to be released on August 13, 2026.
As for acting, Aamir Khan recently confirmed that he will be reprising his role as Phunsukh Wangdu in a sequel to 3 Idiots, for which Vicky Kaushal is reportedly in talks.
In a recent 2026 conversation with Kapil Sharma, he also said: “In September, I will start my work as an actor.
“This time, I have decided I will shoot three films with a gap of only 1–2 months in between each.
“I will be doing three films back-to-back.”
Aamir Khan was previously attached to an untitled film by Lokesh Kanagaraj, as well as a biopic of Dadasaheb Phalke.
However, these projects have been put on hold.
Fans remain hopeful that with his upcoming projects, Aamir Khan’s career trajectory will rise to the top once again.
