A complaint has been filed against Deepika Padukone and the makers of 83 (2021) for alleged cheating and fraud worth Rs. 15 Crore (£1.5 million).

The Bollywood actress not only stars in the upcoming movie with her husband Ranveer Singh but is also listed as one of the producers on the film.

Now, UAE-based financier Future Resources FZE have lodged a case against the filmmakers with Mumbai’s Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala, director Kabir Khan, production company Phantom Films and four others have also been named, India Today reports.

They have been accused of committing offences for criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to the complainant, their representatives met people from the production company Vibri Media as they wanted to invest in the project.

They were promised returns so FZE invested approximately Rs. 15 Crore (£1.5 million), under two representation and warranty-based agreements.

These were a Securities Subscription Agreement and Shareholders Agreement through which the production company became a shareholder.

According to these, Vibri were duty-bound to use the money for business purposes only and not for personal use.

However, they then allegedly entered into multiple agreements for the production of 83 without obtaining positive written consent from FZE.

The complainant claims the accused wilfully breached the terms and conditions with an intention to cheat, siphon funds and cause FZE wrongful loss.

They also said that they were not included in board meetings about the film and related documents.

The complainant said of Vibri:

“It engineered a plan to jointly and severally cheat and delude FZE since the very inception.”

FZE noted that the filmmakers were aware that the presence of the company’s executives was necessary but that this was not done.

They added that Vibri Media’s director, Vishnu Indhuri, had been named a producer in a personal capacity, while documents referred to the company.

Rizwan Siddiquee, the lawyer representing FZE, said:

“It is true that my client has filed a criminal complaint against all the producers of the film 83 on the grounds of cheating and criminal conspiracy.

“My client had no other option but to initiate strict legal proceedings, as the producers did not seem interested in resolving the dispute amicably, despite full knowledge of my client’s rights.

“The matter would now be taken up by respective courts.”

Starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, 83 is based on the story of former Indian cricket captain, Kapil Dev.

The biographical sports drama takes its name from when he led his team to victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

Singh plays Dev while Padukone plays his wife Romi Bhatia.

83 was originally set to be released on April 10, 2020, but had to be pushed back due to Covid-19.

It has had several release dates since then but it is now set to hit cinemas on December 24, 2021.
