"I hope you can be at peace brother."
The comedy world has paid tribute to Neel Nanda, who passed away at the age of 32.
Several comedy clubs, including The Comedy Chateau and The Port Comedy Club, reported his death.
However, not many details are currently known.
Notable television credits include Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Comedy Central’s Adam Devine’s House Party.
Neel had celebrated his birthday earlier in December by performing a weekend of comedy shows.
He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to parents who immigrated from India.
Neel began his comedy career in his hometown before moving to southern California.
His weekly live show Unnecessary Evil was named one of the Top 10 stand-up comedy shows in the city by LA Weekly.
In 2018, Neel Nanda recalled his proudest moment, saying:
“I would say my proudest accomplishment thus far in comedy is performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
“I’ve always wanted to do a set on late night, and Jimmy Kimmel was my first choice.”
Although he has worked on impressive networks, it “blew my mind” as the show was “the first place I performed where my parents were a fan of the host”.
Neel had always been passionate about comedy, watching Comedy Central in middle school and writing down his favourite jokes.
After news of his tragic death came to light, fellow comedians paid tribute.
Matt Rife tweeted: “RIP Neel Nanda. You were one of the nicest, hardest-working comedians I’ve ever called a friend.
“I hope you can be at peace brother.”
Dane Cook’s touching tribute read:
“I echo so many in expressing there is help out there.
“Please remember you are never alone. People want to help you. There is a path through your pain.”
“Prayers to Neel’s family, friends and fans.”
He also encouraged those going through a difficult time to seek help and shared the number for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Many of Neel Nanda’s childhood friends shared throwback photos and fond memories with the comedian.
One friend, Spencer Breslin, remembered Neel as “truly one of the funniest people I ever knew”.
Producer Brian Cullen also took to Instagram and wrote about their longtime friendship and said that they had just recently spoken about a project for the new year.
Film writer Jacob Sirof also shared an Instagram post about meeting Nanda in 2014 and recalled one of his most memorable shows with an interesting audience.
Neel Nanda is survived by his father, his mother and sister.
