"You used threats to enable you to continue offending against this child."
A British Asian man received a jail sentence for raping a teenage girl in a span of nearly three years. The judge sentenced him to 11 years and 8 months in jail.
The trial took place on 1st November 2017, located at Bradford Crown Court.
Identified as 39-year-old Balkar Singh, he will have to register as a sex offender for life. The judge also gave him an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
During the trial, the court heard how Singh carried out repeated rapes on the girl between July 2014 and March 2017. For a span of nearly three years, he would attempt to force himself on to the girl.
If they didn’t have sex, he would make threats to the teenager and even hit her. However, on 15th March, police arrested Singh after his young victim reported the abuse.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and two of attempted rape. The 39-year-old’s defence lawyer, Kitty Colley, told the court how her client showed remorse during the trial.
Through his guilty pleas, she suggested that this could act as a “turning point for his rehabilitation”. She also added:
“The defendant comes from a community where his standing and reputation is now shattered. When he is released, he will have to pick up from the beginning.”
However, the judge rejected this defence and still handed Singh a jail sentence. During the verdict, Judge Jonathan Rose said:
“She would cry, although her pain and tears never caused you to stop. You used threats to enable you to continue offending against this child. These offences were committed for your self-gratification because you told yourself this is what I need to do, so this is what I will do.”
The judge also added that Singh had only stopped his crimes due to his arrest. In term of the victim, Judge Jonathan Rose also made reference to the potential psychological impact Singh’s crime would have on his teenage victim. He concluded:
“You currently fail to acknowledge that you have a deviant sexual interest in children. The court’s fear that this interest continues significantly contributes to my finding that you pose a danger to the public.”
Now the 39-year-old will begin his time in jail, serving an extended sentence with a license period for five years.
