The romantic ballad is widely considered a turning point
BBC Asian Network has announced the UK’s number one Asian music track, as voted for by the public.
To celebrate 15 years of The Official Asian Music Chart, BBC Asian Network asked listeners to vote for their favourite song from a list of the Top 50 biggest-selling number 1s.
During a special programme hosted by Nikita Kanda and Haroon Rashid, it was revealed that the nation’s favourite was ‘Tum Hi Ho’ by Arijit Singh and Mithoon, from the 2013 film Aashiqui 2.
The romantic ballad is widely considered a turning point in Bollywood music during the 2010s.
Arijit Singh’s soulful voice and Mithoon’s haunting composition created an anthem of love and heartbreak that dominated charts across India and beyond.
The track catapulted Singh to superstardom and also became one of the most recognisable Hindi songs of the decade.
Mithoon said it was an important song for him as it fulfilled his “childhood dream” of winning a prestigious Filmfare Award – the first in his celebrated career.
He said: “I dedicated that song to my father and to everything that he taught me and sacrificed for me, so it’s a very special song for me.”
In second place was ‘One Pound Fish’ by the £1 Fish Man, released in 2012.
The viral hit started as a market stall chant in East London before taking social media by storm.
Its catchy hook and infectious humour made it a cult favourite and an example of how grassroots moments can reach global audiences.
Imran Khan’s 2013 hit ‘Satisfya’ was in third place.
Known for its slick production, heavy beats and confident delivery, the track quickly became a staple in clubs and on YouTube, where it continues to attract millions of views.
Khan’s influence on Punjabi pop cemented his place as one of the most distinctive voices in the genre.
In fourth place, ‘Kala Chashma’ by Amar Arshi, Badshah and Neha Kakkar brought pure Bollywood energy when it featured in the 2016 film Baar Baar Dekho.
The party anthem, powered by its infectious chorus and signature dance moves, went viral and remains a wedding and party favourite.
Fifth place went to ‘Naina’ from Crew.
Performed by Diljit Dosanjh, Badshah and Raj Ranjodh, the track combines emotional depth with contemporary production.
The Official Asian Music Chart has always been a landmark for British Asian listeners and the South Asian music scene, featuring mainstream tracks, Bollywood bangers and Punjabi hits.
