Atif Aslam paid tribute to the recently deceased Lata Mangeshkar at a recent performance of his.

In the video, shared by multiple fan accounts, Atif can be seen performing on stage as a picture of Lata Mangeshkar is projected on the screen behind him.

The singer then proceeds to sing Lata’s popular song ‘Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma Hai’, as the audience also joins him in the chorus.

The song was sung by Lata and Mukesh for the 1972 film Shor and is one of her most memorable songs in an almost eight-decade long career.

Fans praised Atif Aslam for his tribute to Lata, with many using the hashtag #UnbanAtifAslam referring to Bollywood’s unwritten ban on Pakistani artists.

Atif has sung several songs in Bollywood films starting with the 2005 song ‘Woh Lamhe’ for Zeher.

However, the singer hasn’t lent his voice for Hindi films over the last few years given the reluctance of Bollywood music directors to use Pakistani artists.

Lata died of multiple organ failure on February 6, 2022.

The legendary singer spent almost a month in hospital post her Covid-19 and pneumonia diagnosis.

Dr Pratit Samdani, who treated the singer, said:

“Lata Didi died at 8:12 am due to multi-organ failure after over 28 days of Covid-19 diagnosis.”

Known for her soft voice, Lata Mangeshkar’s exceptional understanding of Indian classical chords made her a household name and she was often regarded as the best female playback singer of her era.

One of her most famous songs is the patriotic ballad ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon’, a rendition of which is said to have once moved India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to tears.

The song is still played on India’s Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.

News of her passing has resulted in a wave of tributes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled “unforgettable” meetings with the star.

He tweeted: “I grieve with my fellow Indians on the passing away of Lata Didi.”

Abhishek Bachchan said: “Today, we have lost the greatest of all time!

“We are all left heartbroken and speechless. An irreplaceable loss. Rest in glory Lata ji.

“Thank you for blessing us with your voice, talent and compassion.”

“We are privileged to have lived in the times of the great Lata Mangeshkar.”

Her last rites were performed with full state honours at Shivaji Park, Mumbai.

Several high-profile guests including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor attended her funeral.

Two-day national mourning was observed in her memory.
