"I never expected any numbers."
Anand Tiwari recently reflected on the underwhelming box office performance of his film Bad Newz.
The film’s soundtrack was a huge positive.
Bad Newz featured the songs ‘Tauba Tauba’, ‘Jaanam‘, ‘Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam’ and ‘Raula Raula’, which were loved by audiences.
But despite a cast that included Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk, the comedy-drama failed to leave a lasting impression at the box office.
However, it found a new audience upon its digital release.
In response to the film’s reception, Anand Tiwari emphasised his disinterest in the numbers game.
Tiwari stated: “I never expected any numbers. I don’t have it in me to play this number game.
“There are other people more qualified than me who can do it.
“All I wanted was for the audience to love the film because we made it out of love ourselves.
“To get that kind of love, and people resonating with the songs, dance, and the comedy, that’s just great for me.”
Discussing the evolving landscape of content consumption, Anand praised streaming platforms for their ability to engage viewers more intensely.
He noted how OTT services blend the communal experience of cinema with the personalised viewing experience of television, democratising how content is consumed.
Anand continued: “It has really democratised content watching. I feel proud that we (him and Amritpal Singh Bindra) were the first ones to venture into the space.
“Be it Band Bajaa Baraat, Love Per Square Foot to Maja Maa, the first digital film for Amazon Prime.
“We have learnt so much on the way, and while things have changed a bit, the hunger for good content remains the same.”
When asked about the influence of his past successful ventures on securing new projects, Anand Tiwari acknowledged:
“Yes, it does aid but we don’t get any preferences. What does get greenlit is good content.”
“You need to find your own space within the ecosystem.
“There are times when there are too many projects in the action genre, and sometimes too many family dramas.
“So, you need to make sure that your content is different and unique.”
Released on July 19, 2024, Bad Newz centres on a woman who has a drunken one-night stand with her boss.
That same night, her ex-husband turns up at her room and the pair end up sleeping together.
Things get bizarre as she later finds out she is pregnant with twins and both men are the father.
