“And what if they want to join the industry?"
Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt’s mother, Soni Razdan has opened up about her thoughts on the nepotism debate in Bollywood.
Amongst all the Bollywood stars who are being condemned online after the tragic demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, Alia Bhatt is also one of them.
Alia is the daughter of actress Soni Razdan and director Mahesh Bhatt. She has been on the receiving end of many nepotism debates on social media.
Sushant Singh Rajput’s untimely death is believed to have been caused by the struggles and hardships he faced in Bollywood because he was considered an “outsider.”
The actor committed suicide on 14 June 2020 after suffering from depression for approximately six months.
Since his demise, numerous debates concerning the need for mental health awareness and nepotism have been ongoing.
Recently, Soni Razdan has spoken about nepotism in the industry in response to director Hansal Mehta’s tweet.
The director mentioned that the nepotism debate should be “broadened.” He also added that his son has been both helped and hindered by his role in the industry.
He wrote:
“This nepotism debate must be broadened. Merit counts most. My son got a step in the door because of me. And why not.
“But he’s an integral part of my best work because he is talented, disciplined, hardworking and shares similar values as me. Not just because he’s my son.”
“He will make films not because I will produce them. I might not. But because he deserves to make them.
“He will have a career only if he survives. It is ultimately him and not his father who will build his career.
“My shadow is both his biggest benefit and greatest bane.”

“The expectation that people have because of whose son or daughter you are is much more.
“Also those who r ranting about nepotism today and who have made it on their own will also have kids one day.
“And what if they want to join the industry? Will they stop them from doing so?”
