Ajay Devgn calls Maidaan ‘One of his Best Films’

Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan has hit cinemas and it sees the star take on the role of the football coach Syed Abdul Rahim.

Rahim is regarded as one of the most inspiring pioneers of Indian sport and his influence still looms large across football pitches throughout the country.

Discussing Maidaan and how he prepared for the role of Rahim, Ajay said:

“Maidaan is one of the best films I have done.

“From the way the emotions and drama have been captured to its exceptional storytelling, great characters, and the way it has been shot. For me it’s perfect.

“I just followed Amit [Sharma] and his brief for Rahim, because of all the detailing work they had done in the past few years.

“From how he spoke, walked, and behaved to the problems he faced, I just followed Amit on the brief of what he was.

“And I just became the character.

“When the camera rolls, I start thinking about the character, I start feeling what he is going through.

“And when the camera says ‘cut’, I become normal.

“But there were a lot of scenes that were very physically and mentally taxing.

“Apart from a fantastic film, you take home, ‘You want, you can achieve anything you want whatever the difficulties are’ and that’s what the film says.”

The coronavirus pandemic impacted Bollywood in devastating ways with cinemas being closed and the industry facing terrible consequences.

However, as Covid-19 restrictions eased, films such as Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), Pathaan (2023) and Jawan (2023) set movie theatres ablaze again.

Ajay also explained the importance of content-driven films in bringing the audience back to cinemas.

He said: “Definitely more audiences are coming to the theatres now.

“I think if you have a content-backed project and have a trailer which is true to the film, it will engage with more audiences.”

Ajay’s previous film Shaitaan (2024) generated significant acclaim for its content and racy script.

Meanwhile, the actor will next be seen in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, wherein he will reprise his iconic role of Inspector Bajirao Singham.

Scheduled to be released in August 2024, the movie boasts an impressive star cast that includes Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Tiger Shroff and Arjun Kapoor.

Directed by Amit Sharma, Maidaan was released on April 10, 2024.

It has currently earned over Rs. 2.6 crores (£1 million) at the box office.
