"Little Singh wants some white chocolate"
A small British Punjabi child was the subject of harsh comments on Instagram after a video of him celebrating his birthday in TGI Fridays went viral.
As Tarsem, otherwise known as Semmy, was sitting at a table with his family, a group of waitresses came over with a slice of cake.
The waitresses were all white women, although one black man can slightly be seen out of frame.
One team member put the plate down and interacted with a smiling Semmy.
She asked: “Who’s birthday is it?”, to which Semmy replied: “mine”.
The waitress then asked him his name and how old he was. A grinning Semmy replied after briefly looking at his mother, assumably shy and shocked at the surprise.
The lead waitress then called for the attention of all the diners and she along with the team broke out in a birthday song and clapped along the way.
Semmy, uncontrollably happy, basked in the joyful rendition and everyone in the restaurant cheered as the song ended.
Semmy’s mother, Tarn Kaur, originally posted the video and it was subsequently posted on the popular meme page, Imjustbesti.
Whilst many followers wished Semmy a happy birthday, others mimicked the child and trolled him for taking a liking to white women after their performance.
In now-deleted comments, one person said: “And this is where he went from Punjabi girls to white girls.”
Another user said: “Looks like he’s taking a liking to them”, whilst a third expressed: “Little Singh wants some white chocolate now”.
Semmy’s mother Tarn responded to these trolling comments by saying:
“Thank you all for the love for Tarsem (Semmy) but all the people talking about him liking only white girls just because they are in the video is cringe not going to lie.
“He interacts with all colours but most importantly, he’s 5, he’s not looking for a wife yet lol.”
Some even lashed back out at Tarn, calling her a “Karen” for not being able to “take a joke”.
She replied, saying:
“I’m probably just being an overprotective mama bear too tbf.
“But biggest pet peeve, I literally hate when Punjabi singers keep on banging about gora rang and now people saying that’s my kid too.”
A lot of people did come to Tarn and Semmy’s defence and there were a lot of best wishes to the child.
