Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani ~ Review

Ranbir Kapoor’s new venture is the much anticipated Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Our Bollywood film reviewer, Faisal Saif provides the low-down on the story, performances, direction and music. Find out if it is one to watch or give a miss.

If you are a diehard fan of fun, frolic, emotions, love, disappointments, romance, and those Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge kind of stories, I would propose you to go ahead and buy the tickets of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

You will not regret it. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone both make this joyful romantic ride worth the while.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a journey of two different people who are poles apart. Bunny (played by Ranbir Kapoor) and Naina (played by Deepika Padukone) meet spontaneously and begin a crazy journey which has one final destination called love.

They discover all the emotions of love, hate, joy, happiness and sadness together. They discover madness and fun together. And then they get separated.

The story of the film is decent but unimaginative. The first half is very good and smooth.
The film has good performances by Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Raj Kapur and Kunal Roy Kapur.
Ayan Mukheji delivers a good film with a convincing screenplay but drags in the second half. Looks more of a Karan Johar directed film.
The camera work, (minus the editing) and production value of the film is good and keeps you hooked throughout.
The music of the film is already a chart-buster, especially 'Badtameez Dil' and 'Balam Pickaari'.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a fun-filled roller-coaster ride of romance. Review Scores by Faisal Saif

They eventually meet up again to celebrate their best friends’ wedding who are Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Aditi (Kalki Koechlin). Will Bunny and Naina travel through their shattered emotions and feelings again this time around?

Ranbir Kapoor fits in perfectly as Deepika’s soul mate with an outstanding and charismatic performance. There’s not a single frame or emotion that he gets wrong. He is successful in creating a world of Bunny within our hearts.

Deepika Padukone plays out Naina’s insecurities and her discovery of new found freedom and zest for life with superb maturity.

Aditya Roy Kapur is tremendous to watch and Kalki Koechlin tries her level best, but this time it looks as she is over-acting in some scenes. There were definitely better options instead of Kalki.

Farooq Sheikh, Tanvi Azmi and Dolly Ahluwalia were also outstanding. Kunaal Roy Kapur as Taran is loveable and extremely cute.

On the music side, the songs are already a chart-buster.

But a special mention goes to ‘Badtameez Dil’ and today’s hot favourite, ‘Balam Pichkaari’.

The cinematography is also excellent. Ayan Mukherji has both written and directed this film well.

Earlier, Ayan made Wake Up Sid (2009) with Ranbir Kapoor and Dharma Productions. This time he writes a beautiful screenplay but the film somehow drags a bit in the second half. Especially the marriage portions. The editing could have easily been on a much tighter note.

But still, the production value and the performances keep you hooked until the climax. The film also looks like a ‘Karan Johar” directed film in many parts.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is of course a delight to watch and it will certainly won’t ruin your weekend. The film is fun-filled romantic roller-coaster pichkaari.
