“This is when I went on a hunger strike"
Asha Negi opened up about her career and revealed that she even went on a hunger strike.
The actress has been making waves in the entertainment industry, and her journey from television to the OTT space is particularly noteworthy.
She recently shared how her parents initially dismissed her dreams of becoming an actress as a mere phase.
It wasn’t until she staged a hunger strike that they recognised her deep passion for acting.
Asha revealed: “They thought it’s one of those phases where I wanted pets at home. I tried so hard but they never took me seriously.
“This is when I went on a hunger strike and starved myself for 2-3 days. My mother could not take that, and she spoke to me.
“I asked her to give me 2-3 months, and told her if nothing happens, I would come back.
“She was the one who convinced my father and, finally, I came to the city.”
Reflecting on her family’s support, Asha noted that they were more comfortable when she was working on television.
She claimed they have not yet embraced streaming platforms.
Asha added: “My mother would even watch my shows on repeat.
“Today, they are happy that I am happy in my space, but they did enjoy it back then.”
Asha’s transition to the OTT space required significant adjustments:
“A lot of unlearning had to happen. I started with television and whatever I had learned was from television.
“So when you shift to OTT or films, you have to unlearn a lot of things.”
She explained that working in television can become tedious.
Despite the challenges, Asha acknowledged the need to elevate her performance in the competitive OTT environment.
Asha stated:
“Unlearning was difficult for me. Learning was still easy but unlearning was where it was a little difficult.”
Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude for how her career has unfolded.
Asha often shares glimpses of her roots, proudly identifying as a Pahadi.
She values the simplicity and connection to nature that her background provides.
“I think the first is the simplicity, that is something that’s still there. Also, we are a little gullible and people often take advantage of that.
“I believe in learning from my lessons and keeping my conscience clean. Lastly, I love nature and am totally a mountain girl.”
Currently, Asha Negi is starring in the series Honeymoon Photographer which is currently streaming on JioCinema.
