Why are Gen Z Brits turning to Public Places for Sex?

A study has revealed that Gen Z Brits are having less sex than older generations but are turning to public places to do the deed.

Gen Z are having less sex than any other generation in the UK, according to new research. And privacy, or a lack of it, is one of the main reasons.

Lovehoney’s survey found that young adults aged 18 to 26 are having sex just 0.7 times a week. That works out at 35 times a year.

Millennials are having the most sex, with 73 times a year, or 1.4 times a week.

Generation X average 62 times a year, while Boomers come in at 47.

Overall, Brits are having sex around 57 times a year, or just over once a week.

But Gen Z are falling behind, despite being seen as the tech-savvy, socially connected generation.

A Lovehoney spokesperson said: “We wanted to go deeper to discover which generation was getting laid on the regular – Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, or Generation Z.”

And it might be to do with the home-ownership rate remaining low among the age bracket.

Almost 40% of young people are still living with parents or housemates, according to the study. The cost-of-living crisis has kept many from moving out, leaving them struggling to get intimate with partners.

Mahima Chaudhary lives with her mother, brother and partner, and admitted that she feels as if she’s not in a proper relationship because of her living arrangement.

She told Metro: “Because of our living situation, my boyfriend and I hardly get proper quality time together.

“We can’t just cook dinner, watch a film, or be silly and dance around in our underwear, all the things that make a relationship feel fun and intimate, because there’s always someone else around.

“At home, even holding hands or cuddling feels awkward in front of my family. It’s only when we go on holiday that we feel like we can properly connect as a couple.”

Not only are Gen Z Brits having sex less, but they are also being forced to get creative about where they do it.

Lovehoney’s research revealed that 22% of 18 to 24-year-olds are having sex in bathrooms, while 18% are doing the deed inside cars.

But there are legal risks.

It is illegal to have sex in a public bathroom.

And while having sex in a car isn’t against the law in itself, being seen or overheard could result in charges of indecent exposure or outraging public decency. If the engine is on, it could even lead to dangerous or careless driving charges.

The bigger picture lies in housing.

Just 39% of people aged under 34 own their own home, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Thirty years ago, the numbers looked very different.

Average house prices in England are now almost six times higher than they were three decades ago, according to land registry data. Salaries, meanwhile, have barely doubled.

The result is a huge horde of young people unable to get on the property ladder.

Instead, many are staying in their childhood bedrooms well into adulthood. And for Gen Z, that reality is taking a clear toll on their sex lives.
