The TIME100 list of most influential people of 2024 has been released.
For the 2024 edition, only one Bollywood star was featured.
Listed in the Artists category, this star is among one of the top stars in the industry.
It is none other than Alia Bhatt.
The actress made her Hollywood debut in 2023 with Heart of Stone.
Tom Harper, who directed the film, described Alia as a “formidable talent” who is a “truly international star”.
He recalled “I met Alia on Heart of Stone, her English-language film debut. Despite her fame, on set, she is self-effacing and funny.
“There is a grace to the way she goes about her work: focused, open to ideas, and willing to take creative risks.
“One of my favourite moments in the film came from an improvisation at the end of a take where she took the emotional thread and ran with it.”
Tom also highlighted Alia’s “superpower” as an actress:
“Alia’s superpower is her ability to mix movie-star magnetism with authenticity and sensitivity.
“As an actor she is luminous, and as a person she brings the grounded assurance and creativity that make a truly international star.”
Since 2022’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia has been serving up hit after hit.
The film came out shortly after pandemic restrictions were lifted in India and was one of the few successes of the year.
After that, Alia was seen in Darlings and Brahmastra.
While one film got her critical acclaim, the other, which also starred her husband Ranbir Kapoor, got her commercial success.
In 2023, Alia was seen in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani which fetched her many Best Actress awards.
She also made her Hollywood debut with Heart of Stone, which saw her in a villainous role opposite Gal Gadot.
Alia Bhatt will next be seen in Vasan Bala’s Jigra, which also stars Vedang Raina. She will also be leading a film in YRF’s Spyverse.
Alia is also a part of Farhan Akhtar’s Jee Le Zaraa, with Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif.
While Alia Bhatt is the only Bollywood actress on TIME100, she is not the only Indian star.
Olympic wrestler Sakshi Malik and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella are among other names on the list.
On Sakshi Malik, filmmaker Nisha Pahuja said she was among India’s “most celebrated wrestlers” who demanded the immediate arrest and resignation of the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Singh, who is sexually harassing female athletes.
Nisha wrote: “What began as a small, targeted protest to demand decisive government action in favour of the wrestlers ballooned instead into a yearlong battle unprecedented in Indian sport, drawing support from across the country and attention from across the world.
“This fight is no longer only for India’s female wrestlers, it is for the daughters of India whose voices have been silenced time and again”.
