When will ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ be Released?

Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkilahas got its official release date. The film will be released by Netflix.

Fans can watch the intriguing biopic on the streaming giant from April 12, 2024.

Posting an announcement clip on Instagram, Netflix India wrote:

“A crowd would gather when he sang, such was his style.

“@imtiazaliofficial’s #AmarSinghChamkila arriving on April 12, only on Netflix.”

Amar Singh Chamkila stars Diljit Dosanjh as the titular musician, while Parineeti Chopra will be seen as his wife Amarjot.

Both of them were tragically assassinated on March 8, 1988, along with two members of their band.

Speaking about the biopic, Imtiaz Ali shared his thoughts about helming such a project.

He said: “Making Amar Singh Chamkila about the life of the iconic music star of the masses has been a unique journey for me.

“I could not have asked for better actors than the immensely talented Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra to play in this film, especially since it involves some live singing.

“The film follows the crazed popularity of Chamkila’s daring songs, which society could neither ignore nor swallow.

“Having Netflix as a partner, I am humbled to take our story to millions of viewers not only in India but around the globe.”

Diljit Dosanjh also expressed his pleasure at starring in the film:

“Playing Amar Singh Chamkila has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life, and I am thrilled to be returning to Netflix with yet another exciting story.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Parineeti and the entire team that has worked extremely hard to bring this beautiful story to life.

“To be able to sing to Rahman sir’s exemplary music was a meditative experience and I hope I have been able to do justice to his vision.

“Thank you, Imtiaz Bhajee, for believing in me for this role.”

On February 16, 2024, it was announced that Parineeti Chopra would be singing 15 songs in the movie.

Parineeti had delved into her excitement at pursuing this challenge.

The actress commented: “One of the main reasons I did this film was because I was getting to sing some 15 songs for it.

“It was during this film that my co-star Diljit heard me sing and told me to pursue live performances.

“Everyone around me used to constantly put this thought in my head that I could be on stage.”

“It is an exciting challenge to take. I will work hard.

“I am getting into the skin of a musician and learning more about the world of concerts.”

Chamkila’s music was significantly influenced by Punjabi culture and his songs were filled with captivating themes including coming-of-age, drinking and extra-marital relationships.

Sensitively and emotionally told, Amar Singh Chamkila promises to be rich and entertaining storytelling, based on the lives of one of the most famous Punjabi musicians of all time.
