Police have said that the death of a US Indian woman was caused by her in-laws.

It is reported that they strangled her to death in the city of Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala, Punjab.

Officers at Sultanpur Lodhi Police Station officially filed a case against the victim’s in-laws and husband under murder and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

While the in-laws have been arrested, the accused husband still remains in the United States.

The victim’s mother Nirmal Kaur filed the police.

Originally from the village of Mokhewal in Jalandhar, Nirmal now lives in the UK.

She explained that her daughter Rajdeep Kaur got married to Manjinder Singh in 2017.

Singh was originally from the village of Nano Mallian.

The couple, who have a five-year-old child, moved to the United States after marriage and have lived there ever since.

Nirmal Kaur further detailed in her complaint that her son-in-law had been exerting pressure on her daughter to transfer property into her name, with the motive of securing a green card for her in the United States.

Currently, Manjinder Singh is residing in the US without legal authorisation.

Rajdeep allegedly refused to give in to her husband’s pressure.

Subsequently, a sinister collaboration involving the son-in-law, mother-in-law, and father-in-law led to the premeditated strangulation of the US Indian woman.

Detective Superintendent of Police Babandeep Singh confirmed that it was indeed the in-laws who strangled Rajdeep to death.

Both individuals have been apprehended and are scheduled to appear in court for remand.

The police are actively investigating the intricacies of the case.

In India, there have been numerous incidents of in-laws killing their daughter-in-law for different reasons.

In July 2022, a widow was strangled to death by her in-laws in Nalanda.

The allegation was made by Bharat Kumar, the victim’s brother.

Bharat was made aware of the incident after Kanchan Devi‘s neighbours contacted him.

The brother told authorities that his 26-year-old sister married Veeru Singh in 2016.

The widow soon after gave birth to a son and a daughter.

In 2018, her husband died of cancer. Her in-laws allegedly then harassed her daily.

They repeatedly asked Kanchan to demand money from her maternal uncle. When the widow refused, her in-laws strangled her to death.

On receiving the information about the death, the police arrived and took the widow’s body to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.

Parwalpur SHO Vashisht Narayan Singh said that a prima facie investigation has revealed the matter of suicide.

But, no application was made by the relatives of the deceased.
