"This is what our media has come to."
Umar Akmal has once again become a trending topic online after his latest interview with Lahore-based digital reporter Mehrunnisa went viral.
The short segment, recorded for Aik News, was meant to focus on Umar’s fitness and diet routine, but quickly turned into a source of public amusement.
Mehrunnisa, who gained fame during the floods for her unfiltered reporting and Lahori accent, led the conversation with her signature informal style.
She praised Umar Akmal’s physique and asked about his approach to fitness, prompting the cricketer to share details of his daily habits.
Umar explained that he does not aim for abs or a bulky frame, instead prioritising stamina and general well-being.
He added that his wife creates his diet plan and ensures he maintains discipline, even when she is not around.
Umar said: “I try to stay fit, eat clean, and keep my cravings under control.”
The clip, however, soon exploded across social media, drawing waves of criticism and trolling directed at both Umar and Mehrunnisa.
Many users mocked Mehrunnisa’s way of speaking, calling her questions awkward and her remarks unnecessarily flattering.
Others criticised her for commenting on Umar’s body, arguing that he was not physically fit enough to discuss fitness publicly.
One online user joked: “Two legends together.”
Another quipped:
“There’s nothing impressive about Umar Akmal’s body or their Urdu accents.”
Some social media users even questioned her journalistic skills, commenting:
“This is what our media has come to, giving microphones to amateurs.”
At the same time, Umar faced renewed mockery over his old viral tweets written in broken English, which resurfaced alongside the interview.
While the interaction was initially casual, it soon overshadowed Umar’s recent statements about his strained relationship with the cricket establishment.
Just days before the viral video, Umar had appeared on another talk show, accusing former coach Waqar Younis of ruining his international career.
He alleged that internal politics and personal rivalries within the Pakistan Cricket Board kept him from returning to domestic leagues.
Umar claimed that despite staying fit and ready, officials deliberately overlooked him and his brother, Kamran Akmal, in selection matters.
Turning to Waqar Younis, he said the former fast bowler held personal grudges and could not tolerate his fame or lifestyle.
Though these claims reignited old cricket controversies, the Mehrunnisa interview drew even more public attention than his career grievances.
For now, both Umar Akmal and Mehrunnisa remain in the spotlight as social media users dissect every frame of their viral interaction.
