"There can be no other 'Kaanta Laga' girl."
In shocking news, Shefali Jariwala passed away on June 27, 2025, in Mumbai, India. She was 42 years old.
Shefali found fame when she appeared in the video for the song ‘Kaanta Laga’ in 2002.
The song was a remix of the classic song of the same name, which was from the film Samadhi (1972).
Its original composer was RD Burman, and it was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song was picturised on Asha Parekh.
The journalist Vickey Lalwani announced the news of Shefali’s death on social media.
He wrote: “Shefali Jariwala, the ‘Kaanta Laga’ girl, is no more.
“The reason for her death is not known yet to this journalist.
“But I can confirm that she was brought dead to Bellevue Multispeciality hospital (opposite Star Bazaar Andheri) about 45 minutes prior to this post.
“Shefali was rushed to the hospital by her husband and three others.
“This news was confirmed by the reception staff of the hospital, who said, ‘Shefali had expired before she was brought in. Her husband and a few others accompanied the body’.
“We asked for the RMO who took over the call and simply said, ‘For further details, please speak to Dr Vijay Lulla (Cardiologist)’.
“When contacted, Dr Lulla did not deny the news, but would only say, ‘I cannot divulge any details regarding any patient’.
“We then spoke to Dr Sushant from the same hospital, who confirmed the news, and said, ‘We are sending the body for post-mortem to Cooper Hospital’.
The singer Mika Singh paid tribute to Shefali and said: “I’m deeply shocked, saddened, and feeling a heavy heart.
“Our beloved star and my dearest friend, Shefali Jariwala, has left us. Still can’t believe it.
“You will always be remembered for your grace, smile, and spirit.”
Shefali also had a cameo role in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), which starred Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
She also participated in the fifth and seventh seasons of Nach Baliye and was a contestant on Bigg Boss from 2019 to 2020.
In 2018, Shefali Jariwala asserted herself as the only ‘Kaata Laga’ girl.
She said: “There can be no other ‘Kaanta Laga’ girl, ever. And I love that.
“My life has been nothing short of a fairy tale.”
“For a girl coming from a simple middle-class family, earning so much recognition after the first stint is like finding Prince Charming.
“I love every bit of it.”
When her famous music video was released, Shefali drew criticism due to the bold dance moves.
Speaking about this, she explained: “They are more accepting towards bold content.
“But there will always be some people who will find things vulgar.
“We can’t change that. We live in a free country, and one has the right to freedom of expression.”
In 2004, Shefali Jariwala married Harmeet Singh, known for being a part of the music composer duo Meet Bros.
Shefali and Harmeet divorced in 2009.
At the time of her death, Shefali’s husband was Parag Tyagi, whom she married in 2014.
She was also known for the web series, Baby Come Naa (2018), where she played Sarah.
Shefali Jariwala was last seen in Shaitani Rasmein (2024) as Kapalika.
