Taapsee Pannu faced criticism after India lost in the men’s badminton doubles at the 2024 Olympics, with some even blaming her for the loss.

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy lost in the quarterfinals.

Taapsee was in the crowd as her husband Mathias Boe was the coach.

She was seen waving the national flag and jumping in her seat.

The actress attracted a lot of attention but most of it was negative as netizens attacked her for “obstructing the view”.

A user wrote: “Hope she realises what she is doing is obstructing the view of the people behind her!”

Another commented: “Please sit, let the audience behind you watch.”

One angry person said: “Blocking everyone’s view. No manners or decency even after going out of India.”

Many claimed Taapsee was to blame for India’s loss, with one writing:

“Now I know the reason for Satchi’s loss.”

Another said: “Because of her, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy are out.”

Accusing her of “attention seeking”, a comment read:

“It is attention seeking… becoming an ill omen for badminton.”

However, others came to Taapsee Pannu’s defence as one hit out at the haters and said:

“Did you watch the match? Chirag made mistakes and so they lost.”

A fan said: “People are hating her for supporting our country and her husband in the Olympics.

“They can’t afford a ticket to Paris. Neither they are good players or actors.

“Just hating on her for having a different opinion in a democracy.”

Another hinted at the hate Anushka Sharma received for Virat Kohli’s poor cricket performances, commenting:

“Virat Kohli’s words: Indians love to blame women for everything.”

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy lost 21-13, 14-21, 16-21 to Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

After the match, Mathias Boe announced his retirement from coaching.

In a statement, he said: “For me, my coaching days ends here, I’m not going to continue in India or anywhere else, for now at least.

“I have spent too much time in a badminton hall and it’s also pretty stressful to be a coach, I’m a tired old man.

“I know the feeling all too well myself. Pushing yourself to the limit every day, to be in the best shape of your life, and then things doesn’t go as you would have hoped for.

“I know you guys are gutted, I know how much you wanted to bring a medal back to India, but this time it wasn’t meant to be.”
