“Too gorgeous to do a 9-5??? What does that mean?”
Shakira Khan annoyed viewers minutes after entering Love Island with her bizarre “9 to 5” comment.
The 22-year-old from Burnley was among the first to enter the villa, along with Meg Moore.
The pair didn’t waste time getting to know each other but while discussing their jobs back home, Shakira told Meg:
“You’re too glamorous to do a nine-to-five.”
Asked to guess what Meg did, Shakira said:
“I feel like it’s something interesting. Go on, I’ll never guess.”
Meg revealed: “So I do payroll. I’m a payroll specialist.”
Shakira responded: “She’s a corporate girly” before Meg added: “I’m a corporate girl.”
Shakira then said she works in sales and marketing, and also performs as a princess at children’s parties on weekends.
Viewers were quick to react to Shakira’s strange comment as one tweeted:
“Not too glamorous for a 9-5, oh dear.”
Another said: “Too gorgeous to do a 9-5??? What does that mean?”
A third asked: “What does ‘too glamorous to do a 9-5’ even mean?”
Later in the launch episode, Shakira made another remark about office jobs while discussing the male contestants with the girls.
Speaking about Harry Cooksley, who described himself as a commodities trader, she said:
“I feel like that’s a bit of a 9 to 5.”
When asked if she liked that, she replied: “No.”
Shakira then clarified that she likes partners who “graft” but isn’t keen on “corporate boys”. She added: “The finance bros.”
On social media, fans believed Shakira had an issue with those who work regular jobs as one wrote:
“Second time someone’s basically scuffed at people who work a 9 to 5. Not a great start is it?”
Another said: “What’s Shakira’s issue with a 9-5?”
One comment read: “Watching Shakira slag off 9-5 jobs as if she isn’t an entertainer.”
A user said:
“Shakira’s ick being someone with a 9-5 makes zero sense cause that’s like every guy in the world.”
Although Shakira Khan’s comments about 9 to 5 jobs appeared to annoy viewers, her time in the villa could already be coming to an end after host Maya Jama delivered a twist that left her at risk of being dumped.
New bombshell Toni entered the villa and chose to couple up with Ben, leaving Shakira single.
Maya told Shakira she had 24 hours to secure a new partner or risk being sent home.
She was not allowed to try and recouple with Ben. Shakira was allowed to steal a boy from another girl, but only if he agreed to recouple with her. If he refused, Shakira would remain single and be dumped in the next episode.
The twist put her in a difficult position. Having spent the day bonding with the girls, she was now forced to choose one of their partners.
If she succeeded, the girl left single would be dumped instead.
Maya also warned the girls that one of them could be leaving as a result of Shakira’s decision.
Viewers must now wait for the next episode to see if Shakira can turn things around or become the first islander dumped from the villa.
