"I always wanted to be an actor"

Ranveer Singh reflected on his role in Gully Boy as the film marks its sixth anniversary.

Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy hit theatres on February 14, 2019, taking audiences deep into Mumbai’s hip-hop scene.

The film starred Ranveer Singh, whose love for both Mumbai and hip-hop made him the perfect fit for the lead role of Murad.

He didn’t just act—he rapped too, adding authenticity to his performance.

As Gully Boy marked six years, Ranveer reflected on why the role felt destined for him.

He said: “A lot of people who know me a little say that the role was perfect for me or tailormade for me and I will tell you why, because it was a combination of a lot of things that resonate with me very, very deeply.

“The essence and core of the character is something I resonated with.

“Because I always wanted to be an actor, just the way this guy always wanted to be a rapper and the conditions he finds himself in, the given circumstances aren’t necessarily favourable in achieving this dream of his.

“But he perseveres, believes in himself and finally makes it.”

Ranveer Singh revealed that his connection with Murad went beyond just the surface, making the experience truly special.

He also expressed gratitude to Zoya Akhtar for bringing him on board.

Directed by Zoya, Gully Boy shed light on the raw, underdog story of Dharavi’s hip-hop culture.

Gully Boy was praised for its storyline, direction, music, screenplay, and performances

The film won 13 awards at the 65th Filmfare Awards, the most awards for a single film in a year.

On the work front, Ranveer was last seen in 2023’s Rocky Rani Kii Prem Kahaani with Alia Bhatt and made a cameo in Singham Again.

Meanwhile, an onscreen reunion between Ranveer and Sara Ali Khan is on the cards.

The duo, known for their 2018 hit Simmba, will spell magic again with their pairing in a love story directed by Rohit Shetty.

On Instagram, the filmmaker announced his new project, sharing the teaser with the caption:

“Drama, action, romance – All is present in one story.

“2025 ka biggest blockbuster coming soon.”
