"Don’t promote such things with dramas.”
Public backlash is growing against the airing of the drama serial Girhein (2024), which centres on an elderly woman practising black magic.
Many social media users voiced their outrage, claiming the show crosses moral and religious boundaries.
They claimed the drama depicts themes that are strictly prohibited in Islam.
Critics argued that the portrayal of black magic not only glorifies a harmful practice but also poses a risk of influencing viewers.
The drama’s explicit depiction of how spells are cast and the consequences that follow has led to calls for an immediate ban.
Advocates for the ban emphasised that such content could have a detrimental effect on society.
They highlighted that it promotes practices that are already a problem in the country.
A user said: “Depicting this is very wrong. You all know that Pakistani women watch these dramas very attentively.
“Don’t promote such things with dramas.”
Another said: “This drama should be banned! Kindly don’t show this already there are so many households which have been ruined due to black magic.”
One commented: “Directors and writers! I think you guys don’t know that it is forbidden to do such things, even in dramas.
“Cancel this drama!”
Produced by 7th Sky Entertainment, Girhein is written by Imran Nazir and directed by Salim Ghanchi.
The cast features notable actors, including Behroz Sabzwari, Shehryar Zaidi, Azra Mohiuddin, Beena Chaudhry, Hisham Khan, and Sahar Afzal.
The show’s original soundtrack, featuring poetry by SK Khalish, is sung by Sahir Ali Baga.
It is important to note that black magic is a theme that has been touched upon in several Pakistani dramas before.
One notable example is the drama serial Nazr-e-Bad (2017), which explored how jealousy drives people to commit horrendous acts.
Another similar drama, Saaya (2018), depicted a mother-in-law using black magic against her daughter-in-law due to her giving birth to girls.
Additionally, Bandish (2019) followed a family of three sisters tormented by black magic.
However, Girhein marks the first time a drama has depicted black magic in such explicit detail.
The drama goes so far as to show scenes of the magic being cast.
As the controversy surrounds Girhein, the drama makers are facing increasing pressure to address the concerns raised by the public.
