Indian-American singer Priya Darshini’s album Periphery has been nominated for the 63rd Grammy Awards.
Priya Darshini’s debut album has been nominated in the ‘Best New Age Album’ category.
Through her songs, the 36-year-old musician speaks about being a South Indian living in New York and reminisces her life in Mumbai.
Sharing her excitement, the singer had penned a long note on her Instagram page.
Priya Darshini thanked the Recording Academy and the Universe for making her childhood dream come true.
She also congratulated Anoushka Shankar for her seventh nomination at the Grammys.
Priya wrote: “I can’t believe it!!! My debut album PERIPHERY is nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Age Album category!
“A Live album, recorded entirely on one mic getting a nod from the Academy is really quite surreal.”
Priya Darshini’s debut album was released on May 15, 2020.
Comprising of nine songs, the album is a piece of soulful music out of the harmony of different styles, genre and cultures.
Darshini not only explores a feminist perspective in the album but also traces her identity as a South Indian living in New York City.
She is not the only Indian-origin singer who has been nominated for a Grammy.
Ace singer Anoushka Shankar’s album Love Letters has also been nominated for the Grammys in the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category.
The album also has a song sung by Indian singer Shilpa Rao titled ‘Those Words’.
This is the seventh time British-Indian composer and sitar player Anoushka Shankar has been nominated for a Grammy.
The news has come as a big surprise for the entire team and Anoushka even took to Twitter to share the news and tweeted:

Shilpa Rao also took to Instagram to thank Anoushka for the collaboration.
She wrote in the post: “Some dreams aren’t even on your list and come true.

“#ThoseWords will always be a special one for me.
“Congratulations Anushka for @recordingacademy nomination, sending you loads of luck and best wishes (sic).”
Singer-songwriter-cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson is also part of the collaboration on the song ‘Those Words’.
