Bigg Boss 17 winner Munawar Faruqui and 13 others found themselves in legal trouble after a raid at a hookah bar in Mumbai’s Fort area.
The Mumbai Police’s Social Service branch conducted the operation.
They detained Faruqui and others after discovering them smoking hookahs at the establishment.
The raid, which commenced at 10:30 pm on March 26, 2024, persisted until 5 am on March 27, 20204, according to police officials.
During the raid at the hookah parlour located in Bora Bazar, it was reported that patrons were allegedly smoking tobacco-based hookahs disguised as herbal ones.
This revelation prompted the police to take action, leading to the detention of Faruqui and the other individuals involved.
While the accused were initially detained, they were later released as the charges against them were bailable.
According to a senior police official, Faruqui and his companions were booked under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
Along with IPC sections 283 and 336, these pertain to endangerment in public areas and endangering the life or safety of others, respectively.
A senior officer told PTI: “The police found stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui and others smoking hookahs at the joint.
“We also have a video of their act.
“We detained them, but they were later allowed to go as the sections slapped against them were bailable.”
Notices were served to Munawar Faruqui and the others by the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg police before they were allowed to leave.
This incident adds to a series of legal entanglements faced by Faruqui in the past.
In 2021, the comedian spent over a month in jail in Indore after being accused of hurting religious sentiments during a show.
Despite the controversy, Faruqui’s popularity soared.
He eventually emerged as the winner of Bigg Boss 17, further solidifying his presence in the entertainment industry.
However, this recent incident casts a shadow on Faruqui’s reputation.
It raises questions about his involvement in activities that violate legal regulations.
The raid at the hookah bar underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies.
They aim to crack down on illegal activities and uphold public safety.
While Munawar Faruqui and his companions were released after questioning, the police continued to investigate the matter.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to legal guidelines and regulations, particularly in public spaces where activities may pose risks to individuals’ health and safety.
