"Because of girls like you, innocent girls are in danger."

Hemoshree Bhadra, who claims to have won Miss Kolkata 2016, caused a stir on social media when she asked people if her outfit impacts women’s safety – whilst dressed in just her underwear.

The model and internet personality shared a series of videos of herself asking men about her outfit and whether it impacts women’s safety in India.

Wearing a skimpy tube top and knickers, Hemoshree walked up to a tea vendor and asked if her wardrobe would have a negative effect.

The tea vendor did not answer her question.

Instead, he said that he liked what he was seeing.

Another clip featured Hemoshree posing in front of the busy highway before speaking to a man on his phone.

Studies have suggested that many women in India feel unsafe, with one revealing that more than 80% would change their mode of travel if they felt they were in danger during their everyday journeys.

Another found that in Delhi, 95% of women and girls feel unsafe in public places.

But despite the research, Hemoshree believed that India is very safe.

She captioned one video:

“I believe India is a very safe place for women.”

Her videos wearing the bold outfit did not go down well, with many disagreeing, as one wrote:

“In India, a woman is raped every five minutes and they said India is safe for women.”

Others stated that women like Hemoshree are adding to the lack of women’s safety in India.

One wrote: “Because of girls like you, innocent girls are in danger.”

Another commented: “Because of these people, innocent girls are victims of rapists. Don’t know what is the problem with them.”

Many social media users labelled Hemoshree “shameless” for wearing such an outfit in public.

Despite the disagreement with her view, she doubled down and posted a video of herself performing suggestive dance moves.

In the video captioned “My new chai wala song”, she shook her hips and lip-synced a song with the lyrics:

“I go to the chai wala (tea vendor) and show him my knickers.

“I don’t fear anyone and sell my honour.”

In the comments section, many were unhappy with her as they felt the video was unnecessary.

One asked: “What is the need that is doing this?”

Another was baffled that she has one million Instagram followers, given the content she shares:

“Why does she have so many followers?”

Others accused Hemoshree of posting softcore pornography.

Hemoshree has attracted controversy in the past. In October 2024, she faced criticism for wearing a revealing crop top to a Durga Puja event.
