Viewers were stunned as they watched the model being detained.
Bangladeshi model Meghna Alam has sparked national and international outrage after being arrested during a Facebook live stream.
The dramatic incident has raised serious concerns about civil liberties in the country.
The arrest took place during a live broadcast in which the Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020 winner was addressing accusations made against her.
While speaking to her online audience, law enforcement officials appeared on screen, identified themselves, and abruptly cut the broadcast.
Viewers were stunned as they watched the model being detained.
Alam was arrested under the controversial Special Powers Act, a law often criticised for its broad and vague provisions.
The government claimed that Meghna Alam’s online comments were intended to damage Bangladesh’s diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia.
However, many human rights activists, lawyers, and members of the public have questioned the legitimacy of her arrest.
This has raised doubts about the real motivation behind it.
One of the most alarming aspects of the arrest is that Alam was taken into custody without any formal charge being presented.
This has led to widespread criticism, with many calling the move a blatant abuse of power.
The backlash led to the suspension of a top officer from the Detective Branch, who was in charge of Alam’s arrest.
Subsequently, the interim government held a press conference where a legal adviser admitted that the arrest under the Special Powers Act was a mistake.
The following day, Alam appeared in court in Dhaka, where she was ordered to remain in detention for 30 days.
This ruling has further fuelled controversy, with many questioning the fairness and independence of the judicial system in politically sensitive cases.
In an unexpected twist, social media posts made by Alam before her arrest have sparked further discussion.
Meghna Alam claimed she had been in a romantic relationship with a married Saudi diplomat.
Her father, Badrul Alam, later confirmed:
“The ambassador and Meghna were in a relationship, and my daughter refused his marriage proposal because he already has a wife and children.”
According to Badrul Alam, his daughter had even reached out to the diplomat’s wife after discovering the truth.
Badrul Alam went on to suggest that the diplomat used his influence to press the Ministry of Home Affairs in Bangladesh. This led to his daughter’s arrest.
As the case unfolds, human rights groups, the media, and the public continue to call for a transparent investigation into the arrest.
With mounting pressure for Meghna Alam’s release, the government’s response will be closely scrutinised.
