Deekan Singh Vig, aged 54, of North London, has received a life sentence after he bludgeoned his elderly father to death with a champagne bottle in a drunken frenzy.

The Old Bailey heard that the murder happened at the family home in Southgate in October 2021.

Police officers found the body of 86-year-old Arjan Singh Vig on the floor of his son’s bedroom with his “head caved in”.

Vig was nude and surrounded by 100 champagne bottles, some of which were bloodstained.

In his first response to the police, he said:

“I killed my dad. I hit him over the head with a f****** bloody bottle of Bollinger champagne.”

According to prosecutor Deanna Heer KC, the victim was struck repeatedly in the head with a full bottle of champagne, causing severe injuries and almost immediate death.

Vig had lived in his parent’s four-bedroom house for almost 40 years, the jury was informed.

It was heard that he acquired a taste for alcohol during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The jury was told that on the night of the murder, Mrs Vig heard vomiting noises coming from her son’s bedroom.

He told her that he had consumed half a bottle of whisky.

The last thing she saw was her husband comforting their son, however, she called her daughter when he appeared to get “out of control”, before dialling 999.

Vig explained to the police that he was unable to unlock the door when they arrived, saying:

“You’ve come too late. One hour has passed since his death.”

They then saw that the victim’s skull had been “severely caved in”.

Vig, who had blood on his hands and feet, was tasered and taken into custody.

He later wept and said: “My dad is dead. I killed my dad.

“I hit him over the head with a f*****g bloody bottle of Bollinger champagne. Why did I kill my dad?”

Police discovered 100 champagne bottles, 10 whisky delivery boxes from Amazon, and a Scotch bottle that was empty at the murder site.

Two champagne bottles with “significant amounts” of blood on them, one Veuve Clicquot and the other Bollinger, were found next to Mr Vig’s body.

Vig had denied murder but admitted manslaughter on the second day of his trial on the basis that he did not intend to cause his father really serious harm.

He claimed he had autism and that his elderly father had attacked him.

But the jury rejected his claims and Vig was convicted of murder.

He received a life sentence and will serve a minimum of 18 years.
