"Yes it is true. Prima facie it is suicide"

In a tragic turn of events, Malaika Arora’s father Anil passed away in what is reported to be a case of suicide.

The incident reportedly happened at his apartment block in Mumbai.

Anil is survived by his daughters Malaika and Amrita as well as his ex-wife Joyce Polycarp.

Media outlets reported that Anil took his own life.

Meanwhile, a source did not mention suicide but instead said he died in an “accident”.

The source said: “It’s true that Malaika’s father passed away this morning.

“He has not committed suicide, it’s an accident. They all are shocked because he had no ailment or anything as such.”

A police officer later stated that the signs suggested that the 62-year-old committed suicide.

DSP Raj Roshan said: “Yes it is true. Prima facie it is suicide, our team is at the spot investigating for further details. Mr Arora is no more.”

Although Anil is believed to have taken his own life, no suicide note has been found as of yet.

The deceased’s body has been sent for a post-mortem to confirm whether his death was suicide and an investigation is underway.

Malaika’s ex-husband Arbaaz Khan was spotted arriving at the family home in Mumbai.

Police officers as well as media personnel were seen outside the apartment.

A short while later, Salim Khan, Salma Khan and Sohail Khan turned up at the home to express their condolences.

Malaika was reportedly in Pune and upon hearing the news, she returned to Mumbai.

After arriving at the house, Malaika exited the car and rushed inside as the paparazzi tried to get a picture of her.

Malaika Arora took to Instagram to share a statement.

It read: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear father, Anil Mehta.

“He was a gentle soul, a devoted grandfather, a loving husband and our best friend.”

“Our family is in deep shock by this loss and we kindly request privacy from the media and well-wishers during this difficult time.

“We appreciate your understanding, support and respect.

“With gratitude, Joyce, Malaika, Amrita, Shakeel, Arhaan, Azaan, Rayyan, Casper, Axl, Duffy and Buddy.”

Anil and Joyce divorced when Malaika Arora was 11.

She moved to Chembur, Mumbai with her mother and sister.

Anil was originally from the Indian border town of Fazilka.

Anil Mehta worked in the Indian Merchant Navy and was known to be a private individual.

In 2023, Malaika said: “My parents’ separation allowed me to observe my mother through a new and unique lens.

“I learned a rock-steady work ethic and the value of getting up each morning to do whatever it takes to become fiercely independent.

“Those early lessons are the cornerstones of my life and professional journey. I am still fiercely independent; I value my freedom and live life on my terms.”
