"I expected a better script from you."
The latest episodes of Main Manto Nahi Hoon have sparked backlash from viewers over its controversial romantic undertones.
Audiences believe the show is suggesting a romance between Manto (Humayun Saeed), and his student Mehmal (Sajal Aly).
Fans argued the script is edging dangerously close to normalising problematic dynamics between teachers and students.
Mehmal is a young woman from a violent patriarchal household, determined to pursue higher education against her father’s wishes.
At university, she meets Manto, a reserved professor of economics and a writer who shares his name with the famed author.
Hints of attraction begin to surface through suggestive dialogue and situations, though the drama has avoided depicting a direct romantic confession.
In one sequence, Mehmal’s aunt teases her about having a crush, noting how frequently she mentions her teacher in conversations.
Another moment that raised eyebrows showed Manto grabbing Mehmal’s hand while attempting to protect her from her fiancé Farhaad’s aggressive pursuit.
Manto is later beaten by Farhaad’s guards, with the incident framed almost like a heroic sacrifice, further fuelling speculation of romance.
Fans criticised both actors for agreeing to the storyline, claiming A-list stars should reject scripts that encourage unhealthy narratives.
One Instagram user bluntly asked how such established names could accept “cr*p like this” without hesitation.
Another disappointed follower addressed Sajal directly, saying:
“I expected a better script from you.”
On YouTube, a viewer admitted appreciation for the performances yet expressed unease over the teacher-student element and clear age disparity.
Some even hoped Mehmal would eventually reconcile with Farhaad rather than continue a troubling bond with her much older professor.
Others highlighted the respect inherent in the student-teacher relationship, warning that portraying such dynamics risks undermining that cultural sanctity.
One emphasised that teachers are spiritual parents and students deserve dignity, branding the storyline poor and disappointing.
Another user went further, urging people to report the drama’s script, warning that it could distort healthy social norms and relationships.
Despite lavish production, polished direction, and a celebrated cast, fans say the writing has overshadowed Main Manto Nahi Hoon’s artistic strengths.
The show is penned by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar, directed by Nadeem Baig, and airs on ARY Digital with distribution by Six Sigma Plus.
