However, the film has now been hit by a massive 250 crore lawsuit from producers.
Phantom Studios, the makers of the original 2014 film, have moved the Bombay High Court.
They allege that the film is being made without their consent or legal approval.
The lawsuit represents a significant legal challenge to the production of the anticipated sequel project.
Phantom Studios, which produced the original Queen, claimed important details in its legal filing.
When the 2014 hit was made, there was an agreement between specific parties involved.
The agreement stipulated that if any sequel or prequel was to be made in future, then both parties would have equal 50 percent rights.
Phantom Studios added that it had not consented to any sequels, adaptations or derivative works.
The suit was filed against JioStar India Private Limited through the legal firm Rashmikant.
The lawsuit sought an injunction against the release of the film being produced.
It also demanded damages of 250 crore Indian rupees from the respondent.
The suit added that since May 2025, Phantom Studios has been corresponding.
They have been asserting their rights with JioStar about the derivative works issue.
However, they have received no response from JioStar regarding their legal claims and concerns.
The suit stated: “The plaintiff seeks to restrain the defendants from proceeding with the impugned film and to enforce the plaintiff’s rights as 50 per cent co-owner of the derivative rights in the film.”
After the suit was filed, JioStar responded with its own legal claims.
JioStar claimed that the film is not a sequel to the original.
They argued instead that it was an independent production separate from the first film.
“It has no narrative, character or creative connection to any prior work, and is neither a sequel nor a prequel to any existing title.”
Their statement emphasised the complete independence of the new project from the original.
“The word ‘Queen’ is a part of the English language.
“No party can claim exclusive ownership over a common noun, and any such claim has no basis in law.”
The original 2014 film Queen was written by Anvita Dutt in its screenplay.
The film was directed by Vikas Bahl, who brought the story to cinematic life.
The film won the National Award for Best Feature Film at the annual ceremony.
Kangana Ranaut won the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in the role.
Apart from Kangana, the original film also starred Lisa Haydon as a supporting character.
Rajkummar Rao played another significant role in the film opposite Kangana as her co-star.
Queen was also a commercial success at the box office, earning substantial revenue.
