"That's probably the opposite in our marriage"

US Vice President JD Vance revealed details about his marriage to Usha and how he balances family life with the demands of public office.

Speaking on the debut episode of the Katie Miller Podcast, Vance revealed that he and his wife Usha run a husband-and-wife book club.

He explained: “[It’s] actually forcing us to do something together that makes us think that makes us talk, that gives us something that we’re talking about at the exact same time.

“That’s been very good.”

Since taking office, JD Vance admitted he has had less time to read. Still, the couple have completed two books together.

Their reading list includes All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, Ross Douthat’s fantasy novel The Falcon’s Children and Abigail Shrier’s Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren’t Growing Up.

The couple have been married for 11 years and has three children.

They have a weekly tradition. Vance said they once went out to bars in Cincinnati, but now make cocktails at home and sit on the porch of the vice president’s residence.

Challenging traditional stereotypes about emotion, Vance said:

“That’s probably the opposite in our marriage, Usha’s definitely like super stoic and I’m the one that gets super fired up about things.”

Opening up about his wife’s debating skills, JD Vance admitted that she is “the better debater”, adding:

“I hate getting into arguments with her because she always remembers details and facts way better than I do.

“We have a very happy marriage, I’ve been very lucky in the person that God put me with. We’re super brutally honest about things.

“If Usha and I are mad about something, we usually talk about it three minutes later, and that communication has been very good for us.”

The Vice President also spoke about their sleeping habits, stating that he is a light sleeper.

That means he’s usually the first to attend to their children if they wake up in the middle of the night.

He said:

“Usha’s a super heavy sleeper, I’m a very light sleeper, and I also sleep less than she does.”

Typically, at least one of the children wakes up about “once a week” in the middle of the night.

Vance said: “It’s one of those things I kind of like, even though I don’t want to be woken up at three in the morning, it’s kind of nice that they still need that affection, need that attention, it reminds me that they’re still babies.”

He said he is also the first out of bed in the morning for coffee and to take the dog outside before the day begins.
