"Some uncle came to shoot mummy and ran away."
An Indian teacher was murdered on December 5, 2019, outside the school she worked at. Her five-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting take place.
The victim was identified as Sarbjit Kaur. She was a French and Punjabi teacher at the Knowledge Bus Global School.
Sarbjit had arrived at the school with her daughter at 7:45 am and had parked her scooter.
As she walked towards her workplace with her daughter, a man ambushed her and fired three shots at her before running to a car that was waiting for him and fleeing the area.
The man had his face covered with a shawl. Witnesses said that a man had been loitering near the school since the early morning.
As the suspect fled, Sarbjit’s daughter ran inside the school.
The school was put on lockdown. The gates were locked shut and no one was allowed to enter the building until the police arrived.
Meanwhile, Sarbjit was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her dead.
A police team led by Mohali senior superintendent of police Kuldeep Singh Chahal arrived at the scene and launched a murder investigation.
Forensic samples had been collected from the area.
Since the incident, the victim’s daughter had been repeatedly saying:
“Some uncle came to shoot mummy and ran away.”
During the investigation, Dilpreet Singh, the brother of the Indian teacher, explained that his sister had a love marriage with a man named Harwinder Singh Sandhu in 2012 against the family wishes.
As a result, she rarely speaks to her parents but after hearing about the news, they filed an official police complaint.
In 2014, their daughter was born.
However, their marriage started to deteriorate as a result of regular domestic and personal disputes.
This eventually led to Sarbjit separating from her husband. She took their daughter and moved to Kharar.
In April 2019, Sarbjit got a job at Knowledge Bus Global School as a French and Punjabi teacher. She also enrolled her daughter there.
It was reported that Sarbjit’s marriage had become abusive as she filed for divorce in September 2019, citing that she was being domestically abused. The case is still under consideration.
On the day of the incident, Sarbjit was walking with her daughter when the suspect opened fire.
While one possibility is that her estranged husband murdered her, police are investigating a number of other theories.
A case was registered against the unidentified man. Officers also promised that the accused would be arrested as soon as possible.
Officers have already collected blood samples from the area. They have also reviewed the CCTV, which showed a man with his face covered running to a car that was waiting for him.
While it has been difficult for the police to identify the shooter, officers have confirmed that there was an accomplice based on the CCTV footage.
