Police have registered an FIR after footage of a group of men were seen groping a lone woman during the Bhagoria Festival.

Bhagoria is celebrated by the tribal people of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The week-long festival is celebrated in March before Holi.

The broad daylight incident happened in Alirajpur district on March 11, 2022.

The video showed a young woman walking beside a parked truck. It is believed she was targeted by a group of men earlier in the day as she quickly covers her head with her green dupatta.

However, one man spots her and aggressively grabs her, appearing to kiss her.

Another man stops the harasser and ushers him away.

As the scared woman tries to recollect herself, another man aggressively kisses and gropes her.

The man drags the victim to a group of men and they harass her.

Meanwhile, another group of men gathers to see what is going on.

They see the woman being harassed and molested but instead of helping her, they stand there and watch. One man is seen filming the terrifying incident unfold.

The video ends with the victim being dragged away by the group.

The video went viral and police took notice, filing an FIR.

Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar said: “We learnt of the incident on Saturday afternoon after the video went viral.

“So far no one has come forward to complain, but taking cognisance of the incident, we have identified the person who filmed the video and are in the process of catching hold of the men who groped the woman.”

SP Kumar stated that the video was filmed by a college teacher.

Social media users were outraged by what transpired.

One person said: “The incident of misbehaviour with a tribal girl at Bhagoria in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh is very shameful.”

Another wrote:

“These animals must be behind bars. Shame on the people who are shooting the video.”

According to reports, the victim and the accused are from Dhar.

The accused were booked under section 354 (assaulting woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code.

Officers said during the festival, people traditionally drink palm wine so it is possible that the accused were drunk at the time.

SP Kumar added: “Keeping such things in mind, we made appropriate arrangements; but after the incident came to light, we caught the person who made the video.

“A team has been formed to nab those who mistreated the woman.”
