“In the US, neighbours don’t care about each other.”

An Indian man living in the United States has sparked online debate after sharing his reaction to a fire in his neighbourhood.

In a video that has since gone viral, the man explained that a house in his neighbourhood was on fire.

He expressed shock that none of the nearby residents came out to check on the situation, even as emergency services responded quickly to the incident.

The video opened with a stark message: “In the US, neighbours don’t care about each other.”

Speaking directly to the camera, the man explains that a house near his was on fire, and while firefighters arrived promptly, the silence and indifference from surrounding homes left him baffled.

According to him, not a single person stepped outside to ask if the affected residents were safe.

In the caption, he asked: “I know people will abuse me but I am telling the truth.

“If neighbours don’t help each other then what is the point of a neighbourhood?

His post was met with a flood of reactions on social media, drawing a wide range of responses from both Indian and international users.

Some agreed with the man’s perspective and praised Indian communities for their sense of collective responsibility, as one wrote:

“You’re a real Indian bro.”

Another commented: “We are Indians, we care for everyone.”

Others viewed the situation differently, arguing that American neighbourhoods value personal space and that this is often mistaken for a lack of empathy.

One user commented: “One big reason why many like to live in such places is because of privacy. Unlike in India, where everyone likes to poke their nose into others’ lives.”

Another added: “Cause they mind their own business.”

A third said:

“They know the authorities will take care of the same, no need for people to come and make reels of the same.”

One comment read: “Brother, you have gone to America, but your thinking has not changed. People have faith in government authority, that’s why they are not stepping out.”

The incident also brought renewed attention to how neighbours in the US engage with one another.

Research shows nearly 75% of Americans dislike at least one of their neighbours, citing reasons such as noise, rudeness, or what some described as giving off “weird vibes”.

Over 1 in 10 Americans have moved because of issues with neighbours, while 27% have seriously considered it.
