"I noticed she was growing a beard, and also realised that she sounds like a man."
An Indian man has been denied a divorce from his new wife after he said that she had grown a beard once he had returned from a seven-day work trip.
The man who had claimed that his wife had grown a beard and sounded manly after the trip, decided to take the matter to court after his in-laws allegedly said he had no choice but to stay with his new wife.
According to the Times of India, Rupesh (name changed) was not allowed to see Rupa’s (name changed) face before the couple were married.
It is claimed that Rupesh’s in-laws used a dupatta to cover his soon-to-be bride, Rupa’s, face. They cited social tradition as the reason for covering her face.
According to Nextshark, the man was quoted as saying:
“When I saw her for the first time, she had makeup on.”
He added:
“After spending seven days with her, I went out of town for my job. After returning, I noticed she was growing a beard, and also realised that she sounds like a man.”
Rupesh informed his in-laws but they allegedly told him that now they were married he had no choice but to remain with his wife.
Eventually, the matter was taken to the police. Rupesh then decided to take the matter to court as he wanted to file for divorce.
The Court Hearing
During the hearing in court, Rupa claimed her deep voice and facial hair had developed due to hormonal issues. However, she added that her condition could be corrected with medical treatment.
At the court hearing, Rupesh told the court that he had not seen Rupa’s face before they had married. The man was allegedly not allowed to speak to his soon-to-be wife until the wedding ceremony as it was all arranged through the couple’s parents.
However, Rupa’s lawyer argued that Rupesh’s claims presented to the court were false. He argued that Rupesh was making false allegations in order to evict Rupa from his house.
Her lawyer also claimed that Rupesh and his family members had tortured his new wife both physically and mentally. Moreover, the issue of Rupa’s dowry arose. Her lawyer argued that Rupesh’s family had demanded a dowry from Rupa’s family.
Rupa said she was ready to live with Rupesh. Should they get divorced, she added that she wanted to receive an alimony of 20,000 per month if Rupesh earned 50,000 (assumed IND Rs) per month.
After the court had heard both parties, they rejected Rupesh’s application for divorce. It added that the reasons Rupesh had specified for divorce did not warrant the granting of one.
The court also said Rupesh had not attended court proceedings on many occasions and his lawyer had also been absent.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
Female beard growth is a very rare occurrence and is often the result of hormonal imbalance.
This hormonal imbalance can be caused by a rare genetic disorder known as hypertrichosis, and also Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
One known factor of PCOS is excessive hair growth, otherwise known as hirsutism.
British Model Harnaam Kaur is a known sufferer of the condition.
She embraces her beard growth and is an advocate for body positivism, helping to encourage others to also embrace their natural bodies.
