"He then took her to a lodge where he took sexual advantage of her."
Rajesh Patel, a 42-year-old Indian man from Jogeshwari, Mumbai, has been arrested for allegedly marrying a disabled young woman so that he could take sexual advantage of her.
He had promised the young woman that he would keep her happy but once they were married, he took advantage of her disability and used her for sex.
An officer explained that the victim’s father lodged a complaint against Patel when he heard about his daughter’s ordeal.
He said: “The victim’s father, who is 56-years-old, came to the police station and approached us to lodge an FIR against Patel as he took advantage of his daughter’s situation.”
Patel and the woman had known each other for around six months. They first met outside the printing press office where she was working. The suspect had also worked there but left the job in 2017.
He persuaded the woman to accept his marriage proposal after he stated that he would make her happy.
The officer explained the events of the alleged incident:
“Patel was also working with the company but had left the job two years ago. Patel proposed to her and promised to marry her and keep her happy.
“On May 26, during her day off, she told her parents that she is going to the office in order to finish some work.
“She met Patel and they rode off on his bike to Vajreshwari temple in Thane where the two got married. He then took her to a lodge where he took sexual advantage of her.
“He then told her not to disclose this to anyone at her home.”
However, the young woman explained what happened once she got home. Her father had asked her where she had been.
After she explained the incident, her father went to the police.
The police officer added: “When the victim reached home, her father asked her about her whereabouts.
“The victim then narrated the entire incident to her mother after which they approached the police and lodged an FIR against the accused.
Officers from Jogeshwari Police Station arrested the Indian man and took him into custody for questioning where he admitted to taking advantage of her disability so that he could have sex with her.
A police officer stated:
“The accused admitted to playing around with her emotionally in order to gain her confidence.”
“However, we are currently investigating the matter.”
