"fast forward nearly nine years later and I haven't drank."
Erim Kaur revealed that she has been sober for nearly nine years, sharing her story with her fans.
The beauty influencer took to Instagram to explain why she stopped drinking alcohol.
Revealing that she left alcohol during her time at the University of Manchester, Erim said she “really tried” to get herself to drink.
She admitted that she didn’t like the taste of alcohol but drank anyway, much to the shock of her fellow university students.
Erim recalled: “I’d be at pre-drinks with people at uni and they’d be like, ‘Erim’s drinking’.
“And I would honestly drink my drink at the rate that the ice was melting.
“I just didn’t like the taste of it.”
Despite her dislike for the taste of alcohol, Erim ended up being surrounded by it because she ended up getting a few jobs working in nightclubs.
She continued: “So for six years, instead of going out every weekend, I was working.”
During this time, Erim was working with her university’s Sikh society and she realised alcohol consumption is forbidden by the Sikh faith.
Since then, Erim Kaur has not touched a drop of alcohol as the influencer added:
“Now fast forward nearly nine years later and I haven’t drank.”
This has led to some people wondering about the possible fear of missing out.
In the video, Erim explained: “A lot of the time, people are like, ‘Oh, are you alright going to that party without a drink’ or ‘Do you feel a bit left out’.
“If I’m honest, I’ve done loads of videos about this but I really believe there’s a phenomenon where the people around me are drunk, I literally just catch that contagious drunk silly energy.
“I really feel that, let me know if any of you guys have felt that.”
Concluding her video, Erim stated that this is her journey, explaining that her decision not to drink alcohol was not down to a problem or morally bad.
She added:
“I just didn’t like the taste and it didn’t agree with my religion.”
“Fundamentally, I think it’s a bit of an awkward conversation, telling people I don’t drink because they can be a little bit shocked but I have my ways of handling that, so let me know if you want to hear about that.”
