Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh is reportedly set to star in a film about the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The Good Newwz actor made headlines in 2020 for his Twitter feud with Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut over the ongoing farmers protest in India.

Diljit went out of his way to support the protesting farmers and had even reportedly donated Rs 1 Crore (£100,000) to support the cause.

Reportedly, Diljit is now set to team up with filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar for a new project.

It will be based on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots which saw a series of violent attacks on Sikhs following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

Thousands of Sikhs were killed and now, Diljit will reportedly star in a film based on the attacks.

While there has not been any official confirmation of the film, a source told Mid-Day:

“Since it is a period drama and set in the 1980s, several details had to be incorporated while creating the set, which includes a chawl, and a two-storied building.

“They plan to roll by January 9.”

The source also stated that Ali has been thinking about the idea for a while, adding:

“He (Ali Abbas Zafar) was keen to kick-start 2021 with this film, and has been personally looking into the set-designing.”

While more information on the film is awaited, Diljit Dosanjh announced that his upcoming Punjabi film Jodi is set for a 2021 release.

The film, which also stars Punjabi actress Nimrat Khaira, was set to release in June 2020. However, the film had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a previous interview, Diljit Dosanjh talked about how he feels honoured to represent the Sikh community in mainstream Hindi cinema.

He said: “Actually a lot of people have told me that I shouldn’t be an actor.

“People told me to get rid of my turban or not become an actor.

“Back then, I knew that I would be okay to give up films, but not my turban.”

Speaking on his acting career and the versatile roles he has played in movies like Udta Punjab (2016), Phillauri (2017) and Soorma (2018), Diljit shared:

“An actor is more than his ethnicity and his religion.

“A filmmaker, a director has to be convinced and should be able to envision someone in a role, regardless of Sikh or not Sikh, if the filmmaker feels you suit the role, then that’s perfect.”

Meanwhile, Ali Abbas Zafar has a superhero project lined up for 2021.

Reportedly, Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif has been roped in as the leading lady for the upcoming superhero film. Rumours indicate that the film will be titled Super Soldier.
