Massive protests have erupted at Chandigarh University in Mohali after a girl was accused of leaking personal videos of her dorm mates.

The accused has been arrested in the case.

SSP Mohali Vivek Soni said: “It’s a matter of a video being shot by a girl student and circulated.

“FIR has been registered in the matter and the accused is arrested. No death has been reported related to this incident. Per medical records, no attempt (to commit suicide) is reported.”

So far as per the investigation of the police, they have found only one video of the accused herself.

SSP Mohali Vivek Soni added: “We have found out that there is only one video of the accused herself.

“She has not recorded any other video of anyone else. Electronic devices and mobile phones have been taken into custody and will be sent for forensic examination.”

Earlier, the police had said that the girl was being questioned since the others at the hostel believed she was posting films and photos of them online on porn sites.

The chief minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann also tweeted about the incident and has ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter.

The police and the university administration have rubbished social media posts claiming that several girls attempted to die by suicide after their videos leaked.

ADGP Gurpreet Kaur Deo said that a police team has left for Shimla to arrest the boy who the accused girl allegedly sent the videos.

Manisha Gulati, Chairperson of Punjab State Women Commission said:

“This is a serious matter, an investigation is underway. I am here to assure parents of all students that the accused won’t be spared.”

The university has clarified saying that one of the allegedly affected girls fainted, and was taken to the hospital.

Addressing the incident, Punjab School Education minister Harjot Singh Bains tweeted appealing to Chandigarh University students to remain calm and assured them that the guilty wouldn’t be spared:

“I humbly request all the students of Chandigarh University to remain calm, no one guilty will be spared.

“It’s a very sensitive matter & relates to the dignity of our sisters & daughters.”

“We all including media should be very very cautious, it is also a test of ours now as a society.”

Union minister and BJP leader Som Parkash added: “It’s an unfortunate incident.

“Police should take serious action against those involved in this incident so that such incidents do not occur again.”
