An army official was arrested, marking the fourth arrest in the Chandigarh University video leak case.

The official was arrested by Punjab Police in Arunachal Pradesh.

The man has been identified as Sanjeev Singh. According to police, he is the main suspect as it is believed that he blackmailed the female student who leaked the explicit videos.

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said that based on forensic and digital evidence, a police team was dispatched to Arunachal Pradesh to arrest Singh.

He said Singh was arrested from Sela Pass.

The Mohali police have also obtained a two-day transit remand of the accused from the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Bomdila to produce him before the Magistrate in Mohali.

An army official in Delhi said: “During the ongoing investigations by Punjab Police in a sensitive case, it has revealed that a serving Army soldier is likely to have been involved in acts chargeable under sections of the IPC and IT Act.

“Immediately on receipt of information from the police authorities, all possible assistance was extended to Punjab and Arunachal Pradesh Police to arrest the soldier and hand over his custody for further investigations.”

The Indian army said it has zero tolerance for such acts and will continue to provide assistance for the early conclusion of the investigation.

A female student at Chandigarh University had leaked private videos of her dorm mates and was subsequently arrested.

The student told officers that she was being blackmailed by her boyfriend’s friend. She said he was demanding explicit photographs and videos of the girl and other students.

DGP Yadav says Singh is suspected of blackmailing the Chandigarh University student into leaking the videos.

Singh’s phones and other devices have been seized and will be sent for forensic analysis.

Throughout the investigation, two other suspects from Himachal Pradesh had also been arrested and their electronic devices were seized.

DGP Yadav said an all-women’s police team is investigating the case.

Rupinder Kaur Bhatti is leading the investigation, being accompanied by DSP Kharar-1 Rupinder Kaur and DSP AGTF Deepika Singh.

Rupinder Kaur said:

“The accused belonged to Jammu and was posted at Arunachal Pradesh.”

“During interrogation, the girl student had revealed his name and in further investigation, it was found that the man was directly calling the student and blackmailing her to send videos of herself and other girl students.

“The guy was having the video of the girl and we are investigating how he got them.

“However, we are yet to find out with which of the two arrested men he was in contact with.”
