"countries must have taken objection to it"
Bollywood’s new spy thriller Bell Bottom, starring Akshay Kumar, has been banned in three Gulf countries.
The film certification authorities in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar rejected it due to its content being unfit for exhibition.
Following its release on August 19, 2021, each country chose to ban Bell Bottom for its alleged tampering with historical facts.
The film is based on the hijacking of various Indian planes in the early 1980s.
Akshay Kumar’s character leads the charge of the hijackings, while also keeping the UAE Defence Minister unaware.
Therefore, the film is most likely to have received objections from the UAE Defence Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Speaking of Bell Bottom’s ban, a source told Bollywood Hungama:
“The second half of Bell Bottom shows the hijackers taking the aircraft to Dubai from Lahore.
“As per the actual incident that took place in 1984, United Arab Emirates Defence Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, had personally handled the situation and it was the UAE authorities who had nabbed the hijackers.
“So there’s a strong possibility that the Censor Board in the Middle Eastern countries must have taken objection to it and hence banned it.”
Akshay Kumar stars in Bell Bottom alongside Huma Qureshi, Lara Dutta and Vaani Kapoor.
Since her Bollywood debut in 2013, Kapoor has found success in the industry. However, she admits that her journey to fame was hard.
In a recent interview, Vaani Kapoor revealed that she faced financial struggles during her early acting days.
Speaking of this, she said:
“For sure. I have been supporting myself, I haven’t taken a penny from my parents from the age of 18-19 and I have been supporting myself modelling, making my own money.
“This was also very new territory for me, I was very clueless, I was very underconfident, I didn’t know what I am doing, I didn’t know how to go about it.
“But there is a certain vision one has for themselves, I had that vision and I stuck to my beliefs.
“So, I never really tried to short sell myself, that’s one thing I was very certain about from day one.
“There has been financial crunch and all, I am not very privileged where I come from an extremely affluent family.
“My family has gone through ups and downs as well, and I am proud that I have been able to make things work for myself, single-handedly.”
