"All our dreams have been shattered by this incident."

In Habiganj, Bangladesh, an 18-year-old woman was raped while her 17-year-old cousin was assaulted on the night of January 15, 2025.

The victims, both domestic workers in Dhaka, were attacked as they returned home to prepare for the 18-year-old’s wedding.

According to police reports, the victims hired an auto-rickshaw after arriving at the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.

Around 11 pm, the driver picked up three additional passengers, ignoring the girls’ objections to the detour.

The vehicle eventually stopped in a secluded area of Chunarughat Upazila where the attackers took the soon-to-be bride to an isolated spot and raped her.

They also attempted to rape her cousin but she managed to escape.

After seeking help from locals in a nearby village, she returned to help her cousin.

The young women returned home the following morning.

The family of the 18-year-old filed a police report on January 18, accusing four individuals, including the auto-rickshaw driver.

Expressing her devastation, the rape victim’s mother said:

“All our dreams have been shattered by this incident.”

She revealed that the assailants also stole Tk 1.59 lakh (£1,000).

Her daughter had earned the money from doing housework and saved it for her upcoming wedding.

Chunarughat Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Nur Alam, confirmed that one suspect, identified as Parvez Mia, was arrested the same day.

During preliminary questioning, Parvez admitted to his involvement.

Nur Alam revealed that the auto-rickshaw driver involved has been identified as well.

Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the other suspects.

The brutal incident has raised concerns about rising sexual violence in the region.

In August 2024, a 12-year-old girl was gang-raped after being drugged by two local men.

The family’s inability to speak out due to fear of being ostracised highlights the community’s struggles against such crimes.

Other cases include the rape of a fourth-grade girl and a housewife in separate incidents.

The latter was gang-raped after being misled by a driver as well.

Such patterns of violence against women have sparked outrage and calls for justice in the Habiganj community.

The 18-year-old victim is currently receiving treatment in a local hospital as her family seeks justice.

The police are determined to bring all perpetrators to justice, emphasising their commitment to addressing the issue of sexual violence in the area.
