Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam has taken a bold legal step, issuing a Rs. 1 billion (£2.8 million) defamation notice to anchor Mubasher Lucman.

The notice followed a series of accusations made by Mubasher on social media, targeting Babar and his teammates with claims that included match-fixing.

Through his lawyers, Babar Azam has demanded a public apology from Mubasher, warning of further legal action if the apology is not made.

Due to Pakistan’s underwhelming performance at the ICC T20 World Cup, the cricket team and its management have faced intense scrutiny and criticism.

The disappointing results have led to a surge of accusations and conspiracy theories on social media.

Players and coaches are becoming targets of unverified claims.

Adding to the voices of concern is Pakistan’s assistant coach, Azhar Mahmood, who has also reacted strongly to the wave of accusations.

Azhar took to X to express his distress over the harassment faced by him and his family due to the baseless allegations.

He tweeted: “I have heard some false allegations and narratives circulating on social media and other media platforms.

“I categorically state that these allegations are entirely baseless and false, and it is extremely upsetting to hear them.

“This culture of falsely accusing and misleading people to believe a false narrative is now getting ridiculous and dangerous.

“Speaking without evidence and misconstruing facts is a criminal offence, and those engaged in such behaviour will be dealt with legal action.

“Pursuing an increase in followers and media attention by spreading falsehoods is downright unacceptable.

“I will be pursuing legal advice against those responsible for making these false allegations towards me & my family, and strict action will be taken accordingly.

“We will not be discussing this matter further on social media.”

“I urge everyone to avoid engaging with or entertaining these harmful narratives, as it is essential to put an end to such behaviour in our media culture.”

As the legal proceedings progress, both the cricketing community and the public are watching closely.

A user wrote: “This is outrageous! These allegations are so serious, and they are totally false. Mubasher Lucman is a fame hungry dog.”

Another added: “As an anchor, Lucman should be aware that the consequences of accusing someone wrongly is a crime. He should be punished accordingly.”

One said: “Cricket in Pakistan has become a joke. I don’t know who to trust anymore.”
