"I wanted a camera and mic to share my side of the story."
Netflix will detail the life and controversies of Yo Yo Honey Singh in a documentary titled Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous.
The documentary aims to provide audiences with an intimate look into Honey Singh’s journey from his humble beginnings to becoming one of India’s most prominent musical icons.
Directed by Mozez Singh, Famous delves into Honey’s public persona and the controversies he has faced over the years.
From battling alcoholism and substance abuse to facing allegations of domestic violence, Honey Singh has weathered many storms in both his personal and professional life.
Speaking at a recent event in Mumbai, Honey Singh revealed that he is aware of the public perception but he stayed quiet because he lacked the platform to share his side of the story.
Opening up about the documentary, he said:
“Whatever work I have done for 12 to 13 years, people have made a perception about it.
“There are controversies that happened, my effigies were burnt, but I’ve never said anything.
“I wanted a camera and mic to share my side of the story.
“Three-and-half years ago Netflix said they wanted to make a documentary on me and that Guneet Monga wanted to make it.
“I thought there’s nothing like it! I have known Guneet for 12-13 years, and I like her work and passion.
“Then I spoke to director Mozez Singh. He spoke about faith, and I instantly felt like I can trust him, and he has made a great documentary.
“You all may know Yo Yo Honey Singh, but through this documentary film, you will know who is Hirdesh Singh.”
Yo Yo Honey Singh has had an extensive discography, however, some of his songs have faced criticism.
Listeners have claimed the lyrics were misogynistic and sexist.
In 2021, his then-wife Shalini Talwar accused him of domestic violence.
In Shalini’s petition, she claimed that she was “subjected to numerous incidents of physical abuse, verbal, mental abuse and emotional abuse” at the hands of her husband, his parents and his sister.
She alleged that differences between the couple started soon after their honeymoon.
Shalini also claimed Honey Singh would have “casual sex with multiple women” and would not take her on tour.
Although the release date of Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous has not been unveiled, it is expected to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2024.
