"We started talking on WhatsApp and finally got married."

US woman Amini Wollin married Punjabi man Pawan Kumar in Amritsar after getting to know each other on Facebook.

Following their marriage, the neighbours were surprised when they arrived at Pawan’s house.

They saw Amini dressed in a pink outfit, complete with bangles and vermilion. Discussions broke out as to how Pawan came to be married to an American woman.

Pawan and Amini started speaking to each other on Facebook after Amini sent a friend request seven months ago.

They also exchanged phone numbers. Despite living thousands of miles apart, they would speak to each other for hours.

Their friendship gradually transformed into love and both vowed to live with each other.

Amini, a former teaching assistant at the University of North Dakota, arrived in Amritsar on August 15, 2019, and on August 25, they had a traditional wedding.

One thing that the newly married couple is working on is language. Amini cannot speak Punjabi so the Punjabi man and his parents are communicating by making gestures.

Pawan’s mother and father also cannot speak English but they said they will learn over time while also teaching her Punjabi. They also said that they are happy for them.

Pawan, a mechanic for a private automobile company, briefly spoke about his marriage, saying that they met on Facebook and now he cannot believe that they are now married.

He said: “First, we used to chat on messenger and then we exchanged our mobile phone numbers. We started talking on WhatsApp and finally got married.”

Pawan also revealed that it was Amini who proposed. She had asked him to come to America but he could not afford to go. Instead, she went to Amritsar and later proposed to him.

He stated: “I had never thought of love marriage, let alone marrying a Facebook friend.

“But I am not the only one. There are several examples.”

Since their marriage, Amini explained that she has been getting lots of messages on Facebook congratulating her.

On meeting Pawan for the first time, Amini said:

“I was very impressed by him. I like his face, his eyes, his hair. I just like him and he is very helpful.”

Now that they are married, Amini explained that she wants to move to Amritsar to be with Pawan. She also said that she likes the culture and would like to adapt to it.

But she said: “But since he is my husband, he can decide. I would love to cook food for him.”
