“This is an immeasurable loss for our family"
A doctor was killed outside her apartment in Texas when an assailant “came out of nowhere” and fatally stabbed her.
Paediatrician Dr Talat Jehan Khan was sitting with her dog in the common area of her apartment complex in Conroe on October 28, 2023.
Police said Miles Joseph Fridrich allegedly stabbed her multiple times.
Dr Khan’s niece Mahnoor Mangrio said:
“This is an immeasurable loss for our family, completely unexpected.
“She’s a Muslim, strong in her faith, those are identifiable traits about her. She’s extremely loving, kind. She was my aunt… the best aunt.”
Dr Khan moved to the Alys apartments on Mansion View Drive in July 2023 with her 14-year-old daughter. She worked at Texas Children’s Pediatrics Conroe.
Following Fridrich’s arrest, a motive for the stabbing was not immediately clear.
In a statement, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Houston said it is “paying very close attention” to the probe.
The organisation said: “We are unsure at this moment if this was a hate crime, however, given the tragic circumstances, we are paying very close attention to the investigation.
“We will continue to monitor the situation while we launch our own investigation and continue established dialogue with law enforcement.”
Fridrich was arrested on charges of first-degree murder.
He allegedly attacked the doctor at around 12:30 pm before fleeing on foot. Dr Khan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fridrich was later arrested after witnesses to the crime gave authorities a description of the alleged perpetrator.
A witness said the suspect “came out of nowhere” in the shocking attack.
The witness said: “I was outside and I heard a woman out there, and I heard that she was screaming. She was sitting at the picnic table.”
Another witness was Matthew Amador, who pursued Fridrich after realising what had happened.
He explained: “I said, ‘Hey, what are you doing?’ And just kind of spooked him.
“(It) didn’t look like he was there, or was a person, blank face, real dark, you know, evil look in his eyes.
“He had gone and left three times before I even got there, and when I got there, he was checking her pulse to make sure she was alive and then stabbed her three more times.”
Wajahat Nyaz explained that his sister moved to the area from Seattle to enjoy the climate.
“She liked to see the sun and warm weather, so that was one of the main reasons why she moved here.”
The doctor leaves behind a 14-year-old daughter and a 23-year-old son.
Mr Nyaz added: “Her kids and her kids she looked after as a paediatrician were her entire life.
“Everything in her life revolved around those two things.”
Family members said they do not believe Dr Khan and Fridrich knew each other.
Fridrich has faced previous drug and weapon charges in Conroe that were later disposed of or dismissed.
