Speaking to Vogue India in the interview published on September 30, Twinkle opened up about beauty, ageing and her life.
She reflected on how she defines beauty today.
“Beauty visits us when we’re young. There is the beauty of firm and clear skin, and there is the beauty of a firm and clear mind,” she said.
Reflecting on turning 50 in 2023, she compared it to a train ride, saying:
“Even if it’s to Ulhasnagar and not a destination you particularly want to reach, you still want to get there.”
Twinkle’s upbringing shaped her views on womanhood and equality.
Born to Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna, she was raised mainly by her mother and grandmother after their separation.
Dimple Kapadia, who married Rajesh Khanna at 16, welcomed Twinkle at 17 and Rinke at 20.
Their household was entirely female, free from patriarchy’s influence.
In conversation with author Banu Mushtaq for Tweak India, Twinkle explained that she never faced patriarchy while growing up, instead being surrounded by her grandmother, aunts, and mother.
She revealed that she only discovered inequality within the film industry, initially mistaking privilege for seniority.
Male co-stars often arrived late or had larger rooms without question.
Twinkle admitted it was not until her 30s that she recognised these disparities as gender inequality rather than professional hierarchy, a realisation that reshaped her perspective.
She said: “We fixed whatever had to be fixed, did what had to be done and earned what had to be earned. Other women often still have to fight.”
Twinkle began her acting career in 1995 with Barsaat alongside Bobby Deol.
However, after a string of unsuccessful films, she stepped away from acting in 2001.
She married Akshay Kumar the same year and reinvented herself as a successful author.
Her acclaimed works include Mrs Funnybones, The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad, and Pyjamas Are Forgiving.
