"You can’t look like this. You need to be toned."
The Bollywood film Neal ‘n’ Nikki remains a significant chapter in Tanishaa Mukerji’s career despite its difficult physical demands.
She recently opened up about the extreme measures taken to meet the aesthetic requirements set by producer Aditya Chopra.
The actor shared these intimate details during a recent conversation while reflecting on her journey in the film industry.
Aditya Chopra reportedly noticed her physical appearance during the initial photo sessions for the upcoming Yash Raj Films project.
The producer pointed out that her character needed a more toned physique to fit the modern cinematic vision.
She said: “My first photo session for Neal ‘n’ Nikki, I had all these love handles, and he was like, ‘No, you can’t look like this. You need to be toned.’
“After that first photo session, I just went crazy, and I transformed my body because I was so focused on reaching that ultimate goal, and then he was like, ‘Yes, this is Nikki’.”
Following his direct feedback, she dedicated herself to a very strict fitness and diet routine for the movie role.
Mukerji admitted that she previously ignored professional advice but decided to follow Chopra’s guidance blindly for this specific film.
Her focus on achieving the ultimate goal led to a dramatic change in her physical appearance and overall fitness.
However, the intense regimen required to maintain such a lean frame eventually took a massive toll on her health.
She revealed that the demanding routine caused her to experience a significant hormonal imbalance during that period of time.
The actor cautioned that strict bodily routines often cannot be sustained for long periods without causing internal damage.
She explained that her body eventually reacted poorly to the constant pressure of maintaining the specific look for Nikki.
“If you try to keep it, you would have a hormonal imbalance, which is what happened to me.”
The film Neal ‘n’ Nikki featured Tanishaa alongside Uday Chopra, telling the story of finding love in a foreign land.
Directed by Arjun Sablok, the movie was released in December 2005 under the prestigious banner of Yash Raj Films.
It also included a special appearance by Abhishek Bachchan, but failed to resonate with the wider Indian cinema audience.
Tanishaa Mukerji addressed the negative feedback by explaining that she chose to view the film as a learning experience.
Her commitment to the role of Nikki demonstrates the immense pressure often faced by actors in the glamour industry.
Body image expectations in Bollywood continue to be a subject of intense debate among fans and industry insiders alike.
