"Dunki is Rajkumar Hirani's weakest film."
Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki has opened to a mixed response from audiences, with ‘SRK’s Disaster Donkey’ trending.
The film tells the story of four friends who dream of going to England. But they do not have tickets or approved visas.
Their lives change when a soldier promises to take them.
Through a backdoor process, they move to London. However, they struggle to return home.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Dunki also stars Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal and Boman Irani.
There was a lot of anticipation for Dunki as it could be Shah Rukh Khan’s third blockbuster of 2023, after Pathaan and Jawan.
But first reviews have suggested a mixed response.
Some have called Dunki a masterpiece while others have said it is Rajkumar Hirani’s weakest film.
One viewer said: “Hirani once again cooked a masterpiece.
“Hirani again proved why people call him the greatest director of Indian cinema. What mind-blowing and unique storytelling.”
Another social media user said:
“SRK strikes again. It’s going to be Dunki Christmas.”
India Today’s Tushar Joshi said:
“Dunki might not be Hirani’s best work in comparison to 3 Idiots or PK, but it still entertains and leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling as you leave the theatre.”
According to NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee, the film’s strength did not lie in SRK’s stardom.
Instead, the film allowed the supporting cast to shine, particularly Vicky Kaushal.
A very impressed viewer said: “Greatest film of our time. Next 100 years, very few movies will come near to this, but none can surpass it. Take a bow Rajkumar Hirani.”
On the other hand, Dunki faced criticism.
Labelling the film boring, one person commented:
“Dunki is Rajkumar Hirani’s weakest film.
“It’s a borefest of epic proportions. Shah Rukh’s acting and accent is cartoonish.
“You will be scrolling your mobiles in the 2nd half!”
One user trolled both SRK and his daughter Suhana Khan, following her performance in The Archies, writing:
“Even Suhana Khan did better acting in The Archies. WTF is this.”
Sukanya Verma, of Rediff, said: “Dunki is high on ambition but its flimsy premise renders this nearly three hours long journey into farfetched adventures hard to believe, harder to buy into.”
One viral video showed a cinemagoer expressing his disappointment in Dunki before spitting on the poster.

The negative reviews also resulted in ‘SRK’s Disaster Donkey’ trending on X.
Calling the film “pathetic”, one person said:
“Boring screenplay and bad acting by SRK.”
Another comment read: “Expectations are not matched, worst movie of Rajkumar Hirani’s career.
“The humour is missing, forced comedy, Shah Rukh Khan total disappointment.”
