"Shah Rukh is not too keen to get back as Don again"
It is reported that Shah Rukh Khan has exited Don 3.
This comes just days after producer Ritesh Sidhwani confirmed that a script for Don 3 was being written.
He said he was not aware of any plot details but said the script was being written.
Ritesh said: “Till my partner finishes writing it, we won’t do anything. Right now, he is in the phase of completing the script.
“Even all of us are eagerly waiting to see Don.”
The report had fans excited to see Shah Rukh Khan as the titular character again, having played him in 2006 and in 2011.
Shah Rukh’s Don was a reboot of the 1978 film which starred Amitabh Bachchan.
However, a report by Pinkvilla has suggested that SRK does not seem keen to return to the franchise.
A source said: “Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani have had multiple detailed discussions with Shah Rukh Khan on Don 3.
“Before the pandemic, a couple of ideas were also discussed, which took shape of a script through the pandemic.
“Meetings have happened recently too, but Shah Rukh is not too keen to get back as Don again at this point in time.
“He is willing to do commercial films that cater to a universal section of the audience, and Don certainly doesn’t fit the bracket of cinema that he is willing to do for the coming few years.
“He has conveyed his decision to the stakeholders at Excel.”
To grow the franchise even more, the makers planned to bring three generations of Don together to lay down a platform for the generational shift of Don.
This would include Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and a younger star.
But according to reports, Shah Rukh was against the idea.
The source continued:
“But SRK felt the idea of spinning the Don universe would be gimmicky and hence advised the team about his exit.”
It is reported that Farhan is now working on a new script for a reboot. Believed to arrive in 2024, the new film will have a completely different leading man.
The source added: “The talks at the moment are on with a hero who has done two films with Excel in the last decade.
“He is keen to step into the shoes of Don, but has his reservations too, as the legacy of the franchise and the actors who portrayed Don before can’t be replicated by anyone.
“Don will be rebooted once one of the younger actors takes up the challenge.”
